Artist: Paolo Nutini

Fans of Paolo Nutini’s debut album, These Streets might raise an eyebrow or two at this sophomore release. Produced by Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon), Sunny Side Up features an eclectic and "rougher" range of songs that set it somewhat apart from its slick predecessor. Recorded in Ireland, Wales, New York, LA and the UK, Nutini--backed by his band The Vipers--tackles folk, reggae, soul and rock, with varying results. The Motown-esque "Coming Up Easy", the ballad "Worried Man" and the sea-shanty "Growing Up Beside You" are shining examples of Nutini's erudite songwriting skills, as is the charming, Dylan-esque "Tricks Of The Trade". But songs like "Pencil Full Of Lead" and "No Other Way", as well as his forays into reggae-lite and ersatz ragtime are less convincing, often sounding more like sketches than full songs. Whether Sunny Side Up is bravely eclectic or an incoherent disaster depends ultimately on the loyalty--and the patience--of the listener. --Danny McKenna

Great summer album that you can almost imagine being fully recorded under a mango tree on a tropical island. So very chilled out and different to any other album out there at the moment with such a fusion of styles (Reggae, Folk, Jazz...), and a real contrast to These Streets (which I also loved)

This CD is fantastic. Growing up in the 70's I remember so many of these songs, I even bought one or two vinyl!! The classics such as "Never Can Say Goodbye", "ABC" and "I Want You Back" are all on here. The ballads "Got To Be There" and "Ain't No Sunshine" have a young Michael Jackson displaying excellent vocals. A must for any fan of 70's soul, you will not be disappointed.

"We wanted a tough album," producer Quincy Jones recalls in a bonus interview on this special edition of Bad. Though the 1987 blockbuster would appear to be Michael Jackson's most personal statement to date--nine of its 11 cuts were written solely by him--its appeal also rested more on craft than the idiosyncratic art of Thriller and Off the Wall. At the same time, most of Bad has aged well in spite of its digital brittleness and MIDI treatments of gems such as Jimmy Smith's organ solo on the title track. While the third best of his first three Epic solo discs, Bad carries a lot of what people love about Jackson's music. This disc also benefits from two fine outtakes, the exciting, up-tempo "Streetwalker" and the Carpenters homage "Fly Away". Either could easily have extended the record's run of hit singles. --Rickey Wright

Mickael has died and i see myself getting my hands on any of the albums i still own and it is this one and his last " best of " to date. i had Dangerous as a teen. no longer in my possession, shame...
BAD is undeniably perfect and had me so excited just listening to it all over again. i remember that Liberian Girl gives me shivers and still does.
last night we spent the evening watching his videos on MTV and the likes, they all played his videos and that is when you realize that he was absolutely amazing and to think that he wrote the majority of all these classic old tracks is unbelievable.
i am incredibly sad and as i always listened to Beat it and smooth criminal any time i needed a lift and a beat, i shall make an effort to explore more of his catalogue as he had so much to offer indeed, and he did..
Mickael, may you find peace now and your family. i love you.

Michael Jackson's Thriller is the bestselling album of all time, with 45 million worldwide sales powered by eight Grammy Awards. The 1982 album was also a success from which the pop superstar never really recovered--subsequent albums seemed to have no other goal than to beat the records set by Thriller. The highly- polished sound of Quincy Jones's production sounds almost organic compared to Jackson's more recent work, and in the same regard, Thriller was significantly slicker than its predecessor, Off the Wall. Both albums established a Jackson style that aimed for the dance floor with songs built on a state-of-the-art bed of percussion and keyboards. Elements of milestone Thriller tracks like "Billie Jean" (arguably Jackson's best-ever performance) and "Beat It" (with its hard- rock solo by guitarist Eddie Van Halen) influenced not just Jackson's records, but those of the entire dance-pop world. On the song "Thriller", Jackson indulged his taste for the juvenile and invited Vincent Price to rap in a really scary voice. With Thriller the album, Jackson created a different kind of monster--a hit album of such magnitu...

Given the pace of Michael Jackson's post-Thriller release schedule, it's striking that Off the Wall appeared between two albums--Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980)--which the twentysomething phenomenon made with his brothers. Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall defined how much Michael might do. Tracks such as "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", "Rock with You", "Burn this Disco Out" and the title track not only consolidated his dancefloor power, but showed just how soulful and varied his vocals could get on up-tempo material. Artistic role models such as James Brown and Jackie Wilson echo through the mixes, but these were Jackson's leaps forward. The addition of pure pop confection--Paul McCartney's "Girlfriend", Stevie Wonder's "I Can't Help It"--further fleshed out the star's young-adult persona and helped make Off the Wall among the most fondly remembered of all his solo work. This "special edition" features two magic home demos and entertaining, insightful interviews with producer Quincy Jones and "Rock with You" composer Rod Temperton. --Rickey Wright

This is my all time favourite Michael Jackson album - IMO it is far better than Bad or Thriller, and definetely better than his later stuff. It is how I will remember him, not the tortured soul he was at the end..

Letter from Michael Jackson Originally released in the US 25 years ago on November 30, 1982 by Epic Records, Thriller, Michael Jackson's sixth solo album and second with producer Quincy Jones, rocketed the former child-star and lead singer for the Jackson 5 into the stratosphere of international super-stardom. Introducing the "robot" and the "moonwalk" into the international lexicon of clubland dance moves via the pulsing sounds of Thriller, Michael Jackson revolutionised all aspects of mainstream pop culture--from radio airwaves to the newly emerging art form of music videos--becoming the world's most popular entertainer in the process.

The original Thriller spent an astounding 80 consecutive weeks in the American Top 10, 37 of those at No. 1. Seven of the album's original nine tracks became Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 while individual singles from Thriller reached No. 1 chart positions in the US, the UK, France, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, South Africa, Spain, Ireland, New Zealand, and Canada. This genre of music isn't really the sort of stuff I go for and I turned my back on most of the popular music scene well over 30 years ago. But this particular album is just so terrific in every department that no collection should be without it. The songs, the arrangements, the supporting musicians, the playing, the recording and production ~ EVERYTHING is absolutely top notch. Oh yes, Jacko himself was at his absolute peak as well, delivering his vocal lines with unrivalled panache and confidence.

I find it difficult to believe that anyone needs to be reading a review of this album all this time after its original release. Unless you've been living on a desert island, how can you possibly not have heard it? Tragic that in his personal life he went progressively off the rails from this point on, but as a legacy of just what a phenomenal talent he was in his heyday, this album is arguably the biggest milestone ever in recorded popular music, eclipsing even Sgt. Pepper and Dark Side Of The Moon. Any collection without it is incomplete.

Artist: Kasabian

Kasabian arrived with a bang and a half early this century, brandishing a slew of ever more dynamite singles and a rigorously assembled debut album that straddled dancefloors and festival fields with monumental ease and a glint in its bloodshot eyes. It was all very post-Xtrmntr, whilst avoiding much of the seriousness that could have entailed. Whether anyone expected them to chase Oasis’ coat-tails with such keenness is by the by now; they have since been ordained as an anthemic rock colossus of the UK rock scene. That has almost certainly gone to their heads and as years and albums pass they move further away from their original chemical reaction and into attempting to elbow their way onto the table of some of the greats--early Pink Floyd (the well meaning, but slightly aimless "Swarfiga"), The Kinks (the blatant "Thick As Thieves", though it doesn’t take much to imagine Noel Gallgher bashing it out either) and The Rolling Stones ("Happiness", see also Primal Scream). West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum finds them in an exploratory mood even if it struggles to lift off like either their own early material or the greats they aspire to emulate. Still, "Fast Fuse"...
Average rating of 5/5 Best Album of 2009 so far, 2009-06-22
After the first listen, I could pick out a couple of stand out tracks; after the second listen, i picked out a few more, after the third listen the whole thing is just genius. The first five songs are all killer tracks (maybe not the drum n bass one as it's like an interlude). 6 and 7 are a bit of a mellow break from the upbeat tracks but they work. Vlad the Impaler is back to nodding the head and waving the arms (get loose, get loose), ladies and gentlemen is laidback hangover music and the last 3 tracks flow nicely to the end. Kasabian have come back with a fantastic third album after an 'okay' second and an extraordinary brilliant debut. Not afraid to experiment with different sounds, beats, guitars and vocals, this band has got the balance and sound spot on. Buy it and buy it today.

Michael Jackson was still going for pop hits with 1991's Dangerous, but he also front-loaded the album with six straight Teddy Riley-assisted cuts. This half-hour swoop of tense, aggressive, often angular funk was Jackson's most interesting music since Thriller, and still sounds, well, invincible on this remastered edition. After that, the record's uneven, but there's nothing embarrassing about it, either. "Gone Too Soon", a non-Jackson composition about teen AIDS casualty Ryan White, is a quiet statement (particularly played next to the choir-laden "Heal the World", "Keep the Faith", and "Will You Be There") showing that the star doesn't always have to get showy. The sprightly "Black or White" is explicitly pro-interracial romance, an angle its video didn't go near, and the urgent "Give In to Me" is almost scary. Scary good, that is. --Rickey Wright
Average rating of 5/5 Michael Jackson IS the King of Pop, 2009-06-30
First it is key to say that I am a huge fan so I may be somewhat biased, however, I can say that there are a few not so great tracks on here and you'll know which ones I mean when you listen to it. We all like to buy an album that we can just let run through but this one definitely needs a bit of pressure on the skip button. Having said that, there are a list of fantastic, unique and totally MJ tunes on here for example, Black or White (10/10); Will You Be There (one of the best MJ songs ever); Who is it (got a classic Michael spin on it and is beautiful); Keep The Faith (this one was not a single but is my favourite MJ song and is so unique and mind blowing). Slash appears on this album so if you like the sound of the guitar then maybe you'll say this is the best MJ album but as I'm more of a piano or vocal lass I'm not over thrilled with the electric tunes. I can recognise that this is a ground-breaking CD and worth every penny and more.
