Mike Judge, the creator and voice of MTV's insouciant Beavis and Butt-head characters, made his feature film directorial debut with this full-length B&B misadventure, which finds the boys going on a cross-country adventure after their all-important television set is stolen. Fans of the now-defunct TV show will obviously enjoy this film the most, though almost anyone with a passing awareness of the characters will find something to chuckle about. (The funniest recurring gag finds beleaguered B&B neighbour Tom Anderson constantly sabotaged by the guys while on vacation.) Celebrity voices are fun to pick out, particularly that of David Letterman, who rather appropriately plays Butt-head's long-lost father.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com --This text refers to the VHS edition of this video

The Man Who Sued God defies simple definition, managing to be several types of movie all at the same time. As a theological-romantic-comedy-drama, it's in a somewhat unique category all of its own. Perhaps only Billy Connolly could carry off a central role that combines slapstick with raging anger, puppy-dog disappointment and strong language delivered in his distinctive accent. These facets of performance are used and abused in a tale that feels like it really ought to be based on a true story, but isn't. Connolly's life as a fisherman is sunk by the destruction of his boat by a bolt of lightning. The insurance company won't pay up because it falls under that age-old excuse of being an "Act of God". So Connolly decides to sue the deity. The premise raises issues about how the law and the church have apparently conspired together. But at heart the film is a simple character study, so any pondering on legal or theological implications will have to be done on your own time; the screen is occupied with family issues, underhand dealings and a maybe-maybe romance with Judy Davis. Big Yin fans at least will enjoy the Connolly's composite character. --Paul Tonks
Billy Connolly and Judy Davis are brilliant in this wonderful film., 2010-01-30 It is in fact one of my favourite films in my DVD collection. The very idea of the film is intelligently brilliant. Billy Connolly goes up against the fraudulent claim of the insurance companies for using the "Act of God" clause to wriggle out of paying the insured when accident strikes and it really matters. The script is a string of peals of really good conversation, and it is a film very worth watching and getting hold of while it is still available. Go for it.

Take a trip!, 2009-08-09 Well,i've seen this over and over again since it came out,and it still works for me! This film demands your attention, and should not be watched when tired and worn out. See it with fresh eyes and mind to get the most out of it. Just hope that the remake wont stink, but keep the magic and claustrophobic feeling of the original! Little known fact: Pop group A-ha recreated the hallway scene for the Take on Me video.

Easily one of the most interesting and unusual science fiction shows of recent times, Fringe comes from J.J. Abrams, the very same man who had a hand in Lost, Alias and the quite brilliant recent Star Trek movie reboot. And while this may be lower profile than some of those projects, it’s nonetheless equally as worthy of attention. The central concept is actually quite similar to The X-Files, with a core of three main characters investigating what they call ‘fringe science’. This manifests itself with a series of unusual situations and happenings, that the team proceed to investigate and try and get to the bottom of. The Fringe crew consists of FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham, Peter Bishop and the quite brilliant creation that is his father, Walter Bishop. Walter, played expertly by John Noble, is like every mad scientist in the world wrapped into one wonderful character, and Fringe is often at its strongest when he’s is stage centre. This first season of Fringe runs for 20 episodes, all of which are included on this set, and it does occasionally struggle to find its feet. That’s no surprise given the sho...

well worth the wait, 2009-02-10 I have been searching the internet for this series for years and finally someone informed me just before Christmas that it was being released in January. I found it on Amazon.com last month and it was delivered on Saturday last. I was so delighted with it that I ended up watching all three dvd's from midday till around eight at night. This was a truly classic piece of tv drama that was well worth the price and even the wait.

Space Cowboys is a slice of cornball Americana that's so much fun you'll be tempted to stand up and salute. Director and co-star Clint Eastwood manages to turn what might have been ludicrous into a jubilant tribute to age and experience, and Space Cowboys succeeds as two movies in one--a comedy about retired pilots given one last shot at glory and an Apollo 13-like thriller with all the requisite heroics. With a dream cast of Hollywood vets playing old farts described in tabloids as "The Ripe Stuff", the movie jumps from a 1958 prologue (establishing their lost bid for space travel) to 40-plus years later, when the retired Air Force aces (Eastwood, James Garner, Donald Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones) volunteer to rescue a falling Russian satellite that only Eastwood's character can repair. It turns out that Russkie bird is a Cold War leftover equipped with live nuclear warheads, and the movie revs up to a rousing climax in which our heroes prove their mettle. But first the comedy: watching these codgers struggle to pass NASA's physical tests is a total hoot, with running gags about wrinkles, dentures, and oysters for sagging libidos. (Sutherland is the scene-s...
Clint and the boys having a ball., 2009-05-28 This rollicking piece of fun will make any mathematician wince. The celestial mechanics are entirely original,"Get halfway to the Moon and gravity will do the rest." Oh my! The idea of geriatrics in space will no doubt make NASA cry. But the point of this movie is comedy, and it is damned good comedy, even to that poignant moment when one man sacrifices himself so that everyone else can live. Eastwood has reached maturity with this film. Surely it is amusing nonsense, but it is solidly based on the precept that the obverse of comedy is tragedy. Eastwood is at his natural best when he abandons high drama for simple human relations. His grasp of human psychology is never better illustrated in this movie. A must-buy for every intelligent movie buff with a sense of humour.

An intriguingly creepy premise but failed execution marks The Astronaut's Wife, a stylish and ultimately bland thriller about a pretty, young woman whose pretty, young astronaut husband comes back from his most recent space mission a little... odd. Before that fated space trip, Spencer (Johnny Depp) and Jillian (Charlize Theron) were a sunny, happy couple with matching blonde hairdos and a predilection for romping in the sack from extremely clever camera angles. However, after a communications blackout brings Spencer and his partner back down to earth prematurely, things are a little... peculiar. Spencer's partner goes bonkers and has a heart attack; on top of that, the partner's wife takes a fatal shower with a plugged-in radio. Getting out of the space biz, Spencer accepts a job as a corporate exec in New York, and as a welcome to the Big Apple for his comely wife, he molests her at the company cocktail party. Soon enough, Jillian is pregnant, but as you might expect, this pregnancy (twins, don't you know) is a little... unusual. Writer-director Rand Ravich takes his sweet time getting from extremely obvious plot point A to even more obvious plot point B, stretching out t...
wow, super bad!, 2007-04-14 1 star or 5? i had to comment on this film cos it's the worst i've seen in, well, ever. having said that it's so watchable for the same reason. my wife woke up while i was watching it in bed, she saw literally 2 minutes with one eye open, commented 'what is this this? it's terrible'. then went back to sleep. i have to make some specific comments dont i? ok the acting and plot are universally awful and the decision to try and remake rosemary's baby deserves a special joey-chin, that took real guts. no comments can really do this film justice though, you just have to see it to appreciate it. a great example of the hollywood machine at work. magnificent!!

Clint Eastwood may be a little too old (plus he kind of already did his own version of this movie in 1993's In the Line of Fire), but Harrison Ford could have been The Sentinel's lead and lent the same kind of top-flight Hollywood superstar craft that Michael Douglas brings as a superstar secret service agent fighting a frame-up in a panicky countdown to peril. That the marquee name could have belonged to anyone with the same chops as Douglas is no slam to him, Ford, Eastwood, or anyone else of their ilk. The Sentinel is a crackling good thriller because everyone involved is working at the top of their game. Pete Garrison (Douglas) is on the presidential protection detail when another agent is murdered. A creepy informer tells Garrison about an elaborate assassination conspiracy that's related and well underway. Garrison also happens to be having an affair with the First Lady (Kim Basinger), the stress of which causes him to flunk a lie detector test when word of the plot to kill the president becomes more than just paranoia. Garrison is soon on the run, being hunted by his protege David Breckinridge (Kiefer Sutherland, whose 24 experience gives his performa...

Made in 1983, the US TV mini-series Kennedy has Martin Sheen playing a president well before his stint on The West Wing. All of the momentous events of JFK's remarkable term are covered (with actual news footage used to excellent effect), but it is the portrayal of the entire Kennedy family as real, flawed people that gives Kennedy its power. The Kennedys gossip, snipe, joke and bother each other like a real family rather than rigid historical figures or threadbare caricatures. Sheen plays JFK as a man with lofty ideals who is more than willing to dirty his hands to serve his greater purpose. Blair Brown plays Jacqueline Kennedy with a shrewd understanding of politics, but also a whiff of vanity. In addition to the strong performances by both leads, Vincent Gardenia gives a brilliant performance as J Edgar Hoover: stiff, quirky and strange, prurient and moralistic at the same time and boiling with hatred. --Ali Davis
Well done, 2009-05-19 Whilst this TV show betrays the fact that it was made in the early 80s, the performances are still great. Nowadays we have the benefit of so much more information about the Kennedy administration; nevertheless, this is a fine 3-part series and Sheen gives a fine performance - he would later be back in the Oval Office for 7 seasons as President Bartlett - and is still highly watchable.
