Whereas Alicia Keys's debut was in essence a musical overview that recorded snapshots of her life over the five years it took to complete, her follow up, The Diary Of…, is the scribbled footnotes of the very busy two years since. She's certainly kept tabs on what's been going on--the old-skool R&B influences so evident on her debut have become overshadowed by the kind of people she previously stood apart from. Witness "Karma"; with its harsh beats, undulating background string section and funky, slightly dirty groove, it could easily be a Justin Timberlake song, as could the Timberland-produced "Heartburn". She plays it safe on "If I Ain't Got You" and "Diary" though, and there is still much to enjoy that can directly be attributed to her oft-mentioned classical training and childhood influences. It's also easy to forget what an amazing voice she has, best demonstrated here on "If I Was Your Woman". And for all her fancy ivory work, remember that it was the simplicity of "Falling's" descending piano line that sent her career into the ionosphere. There is nothing like that here, just the painful noise of Nas and Rankin contributing to "Streets Of New York". The...

The Element of Freedom, 2010-07-13 The Element of Freedom
If you only want an opinion on whether to choice this cd or not you have come to the right reviewer. You will never be disappointed in any of the works of Alicia. It could be the first album or the Platinum (since been brought out after TEOF with first 3 albums on) and it will always keep a dedicated place in your music collection. This is fantastic and when you buy it you will wonder why you ever hesitated.

In the crowded world of female R&B you need a unique selling point. Songs in A Minor's creator Alicia Keys is no different. She plays the piano. She's classically trained. She was a child prodigy. And at 20 years of age she's incredibly soulful, harking back to the old-skool R&B of Aretha Franklin and even further to that of Nina Simone, with a very strong dose of James Brown thrown in (the fantastic "Fallin'" is a dead ringer for "It's a Man's World"). This retro-ism is further reinforced in her collaboration with 70s soul legend Isaac Hayes on "Rock Wit U". However this reliance on strong historical figures is as much a problem as an asset. In truth this fine talent is being plucked too early. At 20 she's hardly lived enough life to find herself. While she's got a great voice and exquisite musical skills this album lacks the type of individuality that shines so strongly in artists such as Erykah Badu, Jill Scott or India.Aria. This is perhaps why Keys (surely an invented name) has been well hooked up. Jermaine Dupri, Prince and Brian McKnight are all involved in the songwriting process. There's a lot of classically trained artists out there, from R Kelly to MJ Cole, but as...
Amazing!!, 2005-02-18 This album with the second disc is worth buying even if you already have the album after the first release.Disc One: This contains all the tracks that we know and love, each track is different in its own way, and really brings out the best in RnB music. Disc Two: With the first half including remixes and extra tracks not from the first disc (eg. Gansta Lovin w/Eve) and the unplugged, this should be its own album. The remixes include almost everything, so whatever you like, its bound to be on there... The live tracks are from one show, so they all link together without any nasty edits. You can hear how wild the crowd go for Alicia Keys, and how right they are to do so!!!!!

Rap downs the rating, 2010-07-10 I did not realise that this was 'Empire State of Mind - part 1' and I wanted 'Empire State of mind - part 2' which is on the 5 star album by Alicia Keyes "The Element of Freedom" (check that out, brilliant!).
Anyways, rap is not my bag so I gave this single to a friend who likes rap and Alicia.

Simply Fallin' for Alicia, 2004-02-16 I apologise for the pun in the title, but it is a simple truth.Alicia Keys, a 19-year-old Soul Diva has the keys to your heart. Her album "Songs in A Minor" shows her amazing vocal skills and her brilliant gift of playing the piano. Alicia's music is genuinely passionate, sensual and even angelic. So much so, that she is the first J Records artist to reach #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Alicia Keys has a gift that must be heard. Once you feel her music surround you, you will be a proud owner of her debut album, Songs in A Minor. "My music is a fusion of everything that I am, and that is a lot." Alicia Keys. I disgree; her music is a fusion of everything that's great about music, and that is alot my friends! Sit back. Kick off your Adi's. Select 'repeat'. Enjoy!

Fab!, 2010-07-22 Possibly one of the greatest albums ever created, by one of the greatest artists ever born! This is defiantly -- by far -- Alicia's best album. Back in the days where she wasn't mainstream, and overplayed. **MUST BUY**

By the time this long-awaited album saw its release date, most fans had probably read at least a couple of interviews with Alicia Keys in which she explained that first single, "No One"--a firestorm of a song clearly born of a sore heart and steeped in serious soul-searching, was about her decision to retreat from the obligations of stardom when she found out a loved one was in need of her care. The anecdote sticks not just because it explained the song so well--you can actually hear the pain, commitment, and determination in her sultry voice--but because it gets at what makes the woman behind the music so appealing. There's only one way R&B artists grow to become legends, and it's by drenching the words they sing with feeling (think Gladys Knight, Roberta Flack). The skeptical listener might have had her doubts before As I Am, but there's no mistaking it now: Alicia Keys is well on her way to sharing a category with them. This record radiates not just old-soul maturity, the kind Alicia fans say makes her modern rarity, but real soul. Vintage-leaning hooks and horns grab hold on "Where Do We Go from Here" and an assortment of other songs, but Keys can also get by just fine w...

Great Buy, 2010-07-13 Great purchase. I have always liked Alicia Keys music, I originaly wanted to buy these albums as my wedding song is on one of them. After listening to them, all three albums are great in different ways, they have lots different songs I hadn't heard. Would really recommend, especially as they are a great price.
