Average rating of 5/5 Carly Simon - Region free in glorious NTSC., 2010-06-08
Here it is then. The 2009 edition of the previously hard-to-get-your-hands-on-concert... And it's a DVD this time. Live from Martha's Vineyard.

Many who appreciate Carly Simon's songs and voice own a worn out VHS of this particular concert and I'm no exception.

Filmed back in the "Video Era" (1987) and in NTSC format, you're sure to get a picture quality that is only second class, but Carly's voice is first class. Even if image quality isn't excellent, it doesn't affect sound quality and certainly not Carly's performance. She looks happy and lovely.

Good news for european customers may be that most TV sets and DVD players will be able to handle the NTSC format, so you will most probably have no playback trouble with this edition since it's also REGION FREE even if it's sold as REGION 1. At least my copy was, look at the uploaded images of the DVD's back cover.

However, I can leave no guarantees what-so-ever since I have a multi region DVD player, so would not notice any difference.

Strong points: Carly, Carly's voice, the songs and the intimate feeling of this outdoor concert with a relatively small audience at the sea side. It's like a family gathering.

The baddies: Mainly the 80's style clothing she wears in the beginning. Look at those padded shoulders! And with those trousers, I mean, she looks like the third man in Miami Vice! To some extent also video tape image quality and 80's choreography, which certainly left room for improvement.

Luckily, she soon removes the Miami Vice horror clothes and looks like a woman in a dress for the rest of the show. Pheew!

So many people seem to have missed the beauty of this album. Carly's voice may not be as strong as it was. I doubt she would claim it to be. But these lo-fi readings add a real edge to the songs. It Happens Everyday sounds far better than the original. New song, Songbird is beautiful and is worth the price alone. There is a real beauty to these recordings. Most people seem to expect a Greatest Hits. There are many available. This on the other hand has an entirely different place, and a great one if you care to really listen. Very pleasantly surprised.

This has to be one of my favourite albums that I own. I wasnt a huge fan of her Careless Love album - contraversial statement I know :-)

Maddy has a fantastic voice, slightly more blusey on this album. Couple with the brilliant harmonica player William Gailson. This album is quite different from her others, but well worth the listen.

Favourite tracks are the Scorpian and the Frog and Heaven Help us all.

Brilliant!!

Carly Simon, heiress to the Simon & Schuster publishing house, spent her late teens and early twenties playing Manhattan folk clubs with her sister Lucy, and when that began to pall, occasionally jet-setting off to live in France. In 1966, she was discovered by Bob Dylan's manager Albert Grossman, who attempted to market her as the female Bob. It never quite worked, although she spent most of the Seventies turning out a comforting strain of country-tinged MOR.

Her career had two shining highlights, the first coming in 1973. "You're So Vain", the finest put-down committed to tape since Dylan's own "Like A Rolling Stone", mercilessly attacked the duplicitous lifestyle of a former lover, finding time in the first verse to rhyme "yacht" with "apricot" with "gavotte". The second--discounting her pleasant but unspectacular Bond theme--came nine years later. "Why", a maddeningly catchy piece of disco/reggae produced by the Chic team of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, was later sampled by A Tribe Called Quest.

Nobody does it better isn't strictly accurate--Carole King does for one, Joni Mitchell for two--but there are at least two songs here that should grace ...

Highly recommended cd. The lyrics are great and so is the music. Carly Simon is a very gifted song writer!

Almost any way you look at it, the Carly Simon of the '70s was pretty cool. Her acerbic wit and nasally expressive voice had people comparing her to Carole King, but there was also a weary androgyny to her that wouldn't be seen again until the arrival of Chrissy Hynde. Her songs rocked without quite being rock songs, and were folk-evocative without falling into the singer-songwriter bins. She scored multiple singles hits yet pulled off albums with the best of her contemporaries. This is an early collection, so it misses "Nobody Does It Better" and other later hits. Regardless, nearly all the songs here are worth having. Flavorful and nourishing--and a good package, besides. --Gavin McNett
Average rating of 5/5 Outstanding Singer/Songwriter, 2003-05-11
Carly Simon was one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the seventies. Her songs are literate observations on life, love, relationships and commitment, usually set to addictive melodies. Highlights here include the somewhat sad The Right Thing To Do, the enigmatic You're So Vain, one of her biggest hits and a song which fuelled much speculation as to who it was about, and the plaintive Anticipation. Haven't Got Time For The Pain and No Secrets are memorable too. Attitude Dancing is an interesting experiment and That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be is quite a literate number, questioning convention and tradition. Simon wasn't really a folk singer like then-husband James Taylor and as an observant singer/songwriter she created innovative melodic pop. This is an excellent collection of her early hits.

I think this was the second LP (if anyone remembers those) I ever bought. The first being either Carole King Tapestry or Cat Stevens Teaser and the Firecat. Wonderful music still sounds as fresh today as it did in the late sixties

Average rating of 5/5 Best record Carly has put out, 2008-09-08
This CD is fantastic. It has taken 20 listens and I still love it. The mood is unbelievable. There's not a single bad song but they all work together to paint a constintent picture. You may call this wussy music if you like, but for that it's among the best ever. Plus it's got gorgeous cover graphics. I don't generally like Carly that much but this was a positive surprise for the style is just perfect for my likening.

How does it sound then? It's singer/songwriter with a warm haze around it. You can hear a seasoned artist perform here with all her talent and heart put into it. This is no misery and gin. It's full of innocent love songs. It makes me feel a bit girly afterwards, but I don't mind.
