Following on from the wonderful electric slide guitarists Elmore James, Ry Cooder, Lowell George and Sonny Landreth the young Derek Trucks also has a great, individual, expressive guitar sound. This record from 2002 sees him assembling many of the elements that would make 2006's 'Songlines' such a fantastic album. This is also a very varied album featuring blues, funk, jazz and world music with Derek's guitar fitting in effortlessly into all the genres but for me it isn't as focussed as "Songlines" and I miss Mike Mattison's excellent vocals.

Here Solomon Burke guests on two tracks "Home in your heart" and the jazzy slow blues "Like anyone else", wifey Susan Tedeschi sings the old James Brown song "Baby you're right" and Ruben Blades adds vocals to the Santana-like "Kam-ma-lay". Surprisingly the track with Pakistani Qawwali singer Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan "Maki madni" is one of the album's best, with Derek's slide guitar sounding perfectly at home. The album finishes with two jazzy instrumentals the discordant John McLaughlin-esq "Lookout 31" and the mellow "Frisell" - presumably a homage to jazz guitarist Bill Frisell. Derek really pushes the boundaries here, yet produces an album that holds together and showcases his wonderful guitar playing. However, it isn't really a band album and while it's all perfectly acceptable I don't think the album has any truly outstanding tracks.

A future classic live album - do I smell Fillmore?, 2009-02-24
I downloaded the full-length version and it is a absolute cracker. Derek Trucks is a brilliant musician (not just guitar player) and his band is top-notch as well. It reminds me of Santana in that you have a band of similar format named after the non-singing guitarist, although Trucks is not particularly Santanaesque in his playing. It also has the energy, funk and (err...) tight looseness of EARLY Santana. Lets just hope he doesn't hit middle age and end up doing endless duets with people who are too much in awe of him to actually challenge him musically...

Trucks IMHO has gone way beyond his mentors and influences and while there are a few extended solo muso moments this is certainly not live-album-blues-rock wankery. This is the first time I have bothered writing a review but felt I should spread the word. If you're still reading this review you won't regret getting this album.

The songs are generally shorter and snappier, and despite a host of guest musicians and singers sounds remarkably together and as a singular vision. There is no doubt in my mind right now Derek Trucks is probably the inform guitarist, and while the band has his name its not just an album of songs featuring just guitar, he seems to follow the `Miles Davis' principles of less is more and allowing space for a song to breath. Buy this album and you wont be disappointed and fans of Derek can relax he still has not made a bad album.

A new prodigy, 2003-10-03
Derick Trucks and the Derek Trucks band are a breath of fresh air. I became interested in learning more about Trucks upon learning that he has has become the new lead guitarist for the venerable Allman Brothers Band. This young musician, still in his twenties offers amazing virtuoso performances on slide guitar. There are some other very fine musicians playing on this album as well. The most amazing thing about this collection of independent work is that it draws from so many styles. It is impossible to categorize as rock, pop, blues, or jazz. It is just all good.

There will not be a better album by anyone this year, as a live double CD set it's absolutely awesome.Derek Trucks is the best slide guitarist anywhere and with his band you have one of the most exiting and dynamic bands anywhere.Derek toured a couple or so years back with Eric Clapton, everyone then said who was this stunning guitarist.He plays also with The Allman Brothers Band when not touring with the band on this CD. The Allman Brothers Band sell out everywhere they play in the USA and sold out nearly a month at New York Beacon Theatre last year.So the background of this astounding talent his own band since his teens,married to Susan Tedeschi a major singing talent as well. Last years 'Already Free' Trucks most recent studio album had great reviews and the title song on this live set is an absolute classic so beautifully played,along with other tracks from that album,plus tracks from previous ones as well.We're also treated to blues classics such as o The Highway,'Get Out My Life Woman' and 'Anyday' for good measure.The band with an added three piece horn section get the party in full flow from track one, vocalist Mike Mattison surely one of the best vocalists in modern blues and soul,plus a rhythm section that is so solid so full of class that it becomes one of those sets you rather hope doesn't stop.
This must by any level rank as one of the most inventive modern blues based albums by one of the best bands there is lead by an astounding young guitarist who really must be on the way to legendary status in the great guitarists of all time.This live set is an absolute must for blues fans,guitar fans and basically everyone who likes great music played to perfection.Hope this album breaks big to give this band the arena stage they totally deserve.Are we aloud to give more than 5 stars, if not give it the most you can , very highly recommended indeed !.
