Average rating of 5/5 Probably the best jazz guitarist ever!, 2004-05-25
Django Reinhardt should probably never have been able to play the guitar as an adult. He lost the use of two fingers in a fire when he was young, and as a result had to alter his playing style so that the used only two fingers on his left hand. Instead of finding this a disability, he used it to develop a style that is different from most other guitarists of the period.

This CD covers his earliest works, dealing mostly with his 'Hot Club of France' days. There are plenty of standout tracks here, along with the skills of Stephane Grappelli, both of whom benefitted greatly from the collaboration.

Favourites for me are 'Tiger Rag', 'Djangology', 'Sweet Georgia Brown' and 'Swing Guitars'. Of course, everyone is going to have their favourites, and these are just mine at the moment, but next time I will probably pick out different numbers.

This box set really is a bargain, and I would recommend it to anyone who has ever had an interest in jazz guitar, but it will also appeal to anyone that loves good music.

Average rating of 5/5 Brilliant atmospheric swing violin, 2010-04-07
Having recently enjoyed staying in California, in some charming Victorian clapboard B&Bs, where they served up free wines and played some lovely, atmospheric, swing violin music in the background, as the rays of the evening sun filtered in through the wooden plantation shutters. I guessed this music was probably Grappelli & Reinhardt so I decided to buy this CD in order to relive the memories. This turned out to be the very album they had played and it's lovely. All I need now is a glimmer of spring sunshine and I can dream myself back there! Mmhh.

Average rating of 5/5 The Master of guitar-based Jazz, 2005-12-20
Django Reinhardt is without a doubt the finest Jazz guitarist ever to have lived.

Consequently, the jazz he made in the smokey clubs of 1940's Paris, with his quartet, is amazing. Clarinet, Violin, Drums, and Guitar build fantastic layers and tempos that are unparalleled by any jazz group/artist to attempt it.

Buy any Django Reinhardt CD and love it.

Average rating of 5/5 A FERTILE FRENCH PARTNERSHIP, 2009-03-18
This covers the period from 1934 to 1946, although but for a brief post-war reunion their celebrated partnership effectively ended in 1939 when illness left Stephane stranded in London. Despite their very different personalities the lyricism of Stephane's violin was the perfect foil to Django's percussive fingering, and underpinning both was a rock solid rhythm. Theirs was not the first violin and guitar jazz partnership, of course, but they created an individual sound, which had an immediate impact well beyond France, and has exerted a lasting influence. This splendid compilation explores every facet of their music-making, from hot standards like "Tiger Rag" to more contemplative tunes like Django's own composition "Love's Melody". It includes four of the 1935 recordings made under Grappelly's own name, and four 1946 tracks, one a duet and three with British musicians backing the duo. Beautiful sound quality, a full discography, and a informative liner note make this an excellent purchase.

Average rating of 4/5 THE LATE EMERGENCE OF A BEBOP-INFUENCED STYLE, 2007-09-20
To be honest, you won't exclaim "Wow! Django on electric guitar!" when you play the first disc, because his style was so pizzicato already that the difference is barely discernible. You may, like Chad, ask "Wot? No Grappelli?" because his absence is far more noticeable. He and Django had sparked off each other and, despite the disparity of their backgrounds (the fastidious Stephane once commented " `is feet, that was something to 'ear!"), between them they created a unique sound. Instead, the clarinettist Hubert Rostaing is present on the first CD for all but the first two tracks, including transfers of recordings made in the RDF studios in Paris in September 1947. Strangely, although those five tracks show their origins, they are also the most animated, and the electricity can be detected in both senses of the word. Sound quality is otherwise excellent.

The second disc contains four sessions from the early fifties, where the amplification is much more in evidence, and radio transcriptions from November 1947, when the clarinettist was Gerard Leveque. Elsewhere, apart from the March 1953 session, at which Django relied solely on a rhythm accompaniment, the line-up is augmented by trumpet and clarinet or alto sax. These recordings have been somewhat overlooked in favour of the pre-war QHCF sides, but reveal the emergence of a bebop-influenced style. Sadly, some of the tracks on the second disc were recorded originally at too high a setting, which has produced a muddy acoustic, but that is worth tolerating because the virtuosity on display here is of a very high order.

Average rating of 5/5 Um, could it be better?, 2010-03-18
Yes, of course. It could be free. But we all know that's never going to happen...

Considering price, it's excellent.
Considering sound quality, it's excellent.
Etc, etc.

It's impeccable.

What's needed is a track listing online.
I can tell you it's got all of Django's classics, and then some.
