i love this ep from enya. she can make christmas music sound great. most christmas music is naff at best but enya has worked magic with adeste fideles and we wish you a merry christmas. my personal favourites out of the 4 are:- magic of the night and we wish you a merry christmas. i wish i could give this cd 10 stars and not 5.

Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first instalment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, the composer has infused this epic with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of "Concerning Hobbits" to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of "A Knife in the Dark"). Key to his score's sense of mystery and magic are the rich choral passages that are interspersed throughout, some so ominously gothic they make The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" sound almost sunny by comparison. Enya's contributions ("The Council of Elrond" and the song "May It Be") add a sense of organic tranquillity, but it's Shore's Wagnerian-scaled orchestral score that will long be cherished by admirers of film music and Hobbits alike. --Jerry McCulley

Howard Shore's enthralling musical score deservedly won the 'Best original score' Oscar. The music encapsulates the fantasy genre of film perfectly, utilising different themes for various characters and parts of the story. The 'hobbit' theme is played delicately at the beginning of the film with flutes, but is then used prominently throughout with a more powerful feel to suit the moments of triumph and heroism. Gothic choir compositions are used to build suspense in the darker, demonic scenes along with more angelic pieces to suit the melancholy and ethereal moods of the film. Enya has produced two songs for the soundtrack, which are used for the romantic and sorrowful scenes. The enchantment of Enya's voice coupled with the tranquillity of the melodies adds an entirely new dimension to the soundtrack.

Enya's 1988 recording, Watermark, achieved landmark success with her groundbreaking use of multi-tracking technology to fuse new age and Celtic themes and instrumentation. The meticulous production defines her sound and achieves continuity even while weaving together tender ballads, piano pieces, massively layered vocal harmonies and symphonic synthesizer movements. Although Enya's pristine voice isn't especially strong, her lead vocals possess a vulnerability that reflects the lyrics' sense of personal searching. New Age diva Enya first became widely known when her 1988 album Watermark sold 4 million copies and launched the single "Orinoco Flow." Her follow-up, Shepherd Moons, was even more successful, selling over 10 million copies despite its slightly lower grade of ethereal enchantment. In 1997 she released Paint the Sky with Stars, an assortment of her best work from these two early albums plus gems from 1995's The Memory of Trees and the soundtrack to the BBC series The Celts. The most melodic and atmospheric examples of Enya's lovely Celtic-flavored songwriting shine on this disc. Those unfamiliar with the former Clannad member will find charm in such sweet lullabies as "Marble Halls" and "China Roses" while delighting in the more energetic "Book of Days," "Storms in Africa," and "Caribbean Blue." Overall, an outstanding collection from an artist who gives New Age a good name. --Karen Karleski

As a pensioner & having only recently "discovered" Enya, I have been "collecting" her CD's. This particular CD has all of my favorites on one CD. I find it fabulous

From the first blanket of choral voices awash in reverb, Amarantine is instantly recognizable as a product of Enya, the Irish chanteuse who has created a genre unto herself. The triumvirate of Enya, lyricist Roma Ryan and producer Nicky Ryan work the formula they perfected on Watermark, layering her voice in lush choirs pushed along by pizzicato synth strings, swooning orchestral pads, and harpsichord arpeggios. On tracks like "Less Than a Pearl" and "Drifting," Enya flirts with a timeless sound born in gothic chants and hymns. The former is one of three songs that she sings in Roma Ryan's fictitious language of Loxian. It seems to free her, especially on "The River Sings," a veritable rave-up where she gets the tribal choir going in the style of Scottish mouth music. But to get there you have to slog through slo-mo ballads that manage to be dirge-like and singsong at the same time, like the Carpenters on Quaaludes. The relatively restrained arrangement of "It's in the Rain" almost attains a folk-like simplicity that Enya hasn't experienced since she sang with her siblings in Clannad a quarter-century ago. I love Enya but this album beats all of them! Thoroughly recommend it, especially Disc 1.

This is Enya, pure and simple. This song, as well at the album And Winter Came follows her continued richness of music. It is simplistic, yet deeply complex in its listening potential. And Winter Came is closer in style to her earlier works, is deeply enjoyable, and soothing to the soul.
