Sometimes time causes albums to be overlooked but please don't let this 1974 album pass you buy if you're a soul and funk fan.
For this is a real gem that is up with the best of Eddie Kendricks, Temptations, Sly Stone and a galaxy other more cooler artists than the J5.
Take a listen to 'I Am Love' as it moves from its quiet soulful introduction through full tilt funk with some of the finest funk meets hard rock riffs going and the funk workout that is The Life Of The Party.
Or maybe if you love 'Quiet Storm' soul try If I Don't Love You with Jermaine on lead vocals. Michael's, not wishing to take away the fact this is a group album show clear signs of maturation in If I Don't Love You This Way (and if you like that check out his Forever Michael solo album).
Recommended for all 70's soul and funk fans.

Christmastime is a time when families get together and sing a few old favorites to raise some seasonal cheer. That's exactly the spirit you'll hear on the Jackson family's holiday gathering--albeit with a few more eye-popping performances than in most home get-togethers. Michael, Jermaine, Tito, and their sibs flash energy and enthusiasm aplenty on old-time faves such as "Up on the Housetop" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." And even when they take things down a notch for ballads like "Christmas Won't Be the Same" and "Give Love on Christmas Day," the affection and tenderness shine through in the way they can only at a true family celebration. --David Sprague
Average rating of 5/5 Christmas Spirit the Jackson 5 way!, 2010-06-09
Oh how I love this cd! Just to have Michael's voice sweetly singing these Chrismas ditties is an absolute pleasure especially as he loved Christmas. It is so heartwarming to hear him singing back in the day when, apart from working his socks off and not really having a proper childhood, he was carefree and had all his life ahead of him! This is a must for any MJ fan and anyone who loves Christmas!

A terrific addition to any MJ/Jacksons collection. Very well-written songs, and the singing is first rate Jacksons at the top of their game. No more superlatives - it's simply super!!

The Jackson 5's Third Album was not only that, it was their third in nine months. "I'll Be There", the signature ballad and the album's best track, was already ruling the airwaves when the LP appeared. The meld of fuzz-tone guitar and soul harmonies on "Ready or Not (Here I Come)" and "Can I See You in the Morning" makes for sweet listening, as does a cover of the beach-music favourite "Oh How Happy". And "How Funky is Your Chicken" is worthy of the Rufus Thomas hit it riffs on. "Goin' Back to Indiana," however, reeks of showbiz clichés, as does the next album's borderline-offensive "Honey Chile."

The laidback Maybe Tomorrow nonetheless offers excellent ballad performances on its title single, "Never Can Say Goodbye," and Jermaine doo-wop showcases "16 Candles" and "She's Good". But the late-'71 hit "Sugar Daddy," included here as a bonus track alongside its flip, "I'm So Happy," proves that the once-fresh "ABC"/"Love You Save" lyric formula was running on fumes. --Rickey Wright

It's hard to think of a more quintessential pre-disco-era super group, and this really is the ultimate collection of the Jackson 5's finest. From the super-sweet "I'll Be There" (which went on to become one of the most-covered songs in recent history) to the peppy pop of "I Want You Back", the period's essence is in every single high note. The Afros, the bell-bottoms, Michael's pre-identity crisis, it's all there and so much more fun than anything any of the clan has done since. This is a great party album: classics like "ABC", "Never Can Say Goodbye", and "Rockin' Robin" sit alongside more jazz-influenced tracks like a cover of the Isleys' "It's Your Thing", and are guaranteed to keep all feet on the dance floor. --Rebecca Wallwork

Average rating of 4/5 Historically interesting but time to leave Motown!, 2010-04-04
I bought Get it Together, Joyful Jukebox Music and this album at the same time, to complete my pre-Jacksons collection. Get it Together was wonderful, and Joyful Jukebox Music was far better than I anticipated, but when I listened to this after the other two, I was underwhelmed by some of the content. To explain, I have never listened to a Jacksons/Michael Jackson album without being mesmerised on the first outing! It's true that after more plays Dancing Machine/Moving Violation got better, but there are a lot of 'filler' songs that Michael Jackson himself hated to see on albums - he felt the record-buying public were cheated by sub-standard products on albums. As we know that both albums were not received very well by fans and critics at the time they were released, you can see that the group's dissatisfaction had spilled over into their work. It was indeed time to leave Motown - Jermaine being absolutely no loss to the group, as Marlon was well able at that stage to take over his vocals.
