Average rating of 5/5 Johnnys Back at the Whisky - Dont miss this one!, 2002-03-05
If youve never sampled the music of one of the true pioneers and most influencial of recent rock stars, add this one to your collection right away. I guarantee youll then be snapping up the back catalogue with gusto. Johnny Rivers remains one of Rocks true under-rated singer songwriter performers and with this album he retraces his debut at the legendary Whisky a go go. This time though the recording quality and tightness of his band fully complements the artistry of the man as he swings, rocks and laments us through a musical journey spanning a career of some 40+ years. Maybe he will get the true plaudits he deserves one day, but until then get into this big-style, and enjoy! From Maybelline (best version ever of this song) to Secret Agent Man, this album has it all. I dont think there has been a more meaningful record release in years and this one is a must.

Average rating of 5/5 John lee Hooker, 2009-09-07
Most songs on these two albums(on one CD)are light entertainment music of high Quality. Good 60ies feeling... BUT there is one track that is outstanding: "John Lee Hooker"!!!
It's actually an Ode to John Lee Hooker, as we called it in the "Hippie days". This is a meddley of the Rolling Stones song "Satisfaction" and other songs like "Baby please don't do" played in the Boogie Style of John Lee Hooker. However this is played slow and legato rather than the faster and staccato Hooker Boogies!
This slow mesmerising rhytm allows for a lot of great solistic work of the band. This is one of the greatest tracks ever recorded and completely justifies the purchase of this CD, despite the otherwise mediocre but good and entertaining tracks.

Average rating of 5/5 Cover Story, 2008-04-16
Johnny Rivers never had even a No 75 single here-as far as out chart goes but all the records came out here.
Virtually a covers man he was known to have written the odd song and sometimes made original versions.
By the time I get to Phoenix was one of them another by the same writer-Jim Webb-was Carpet Man covered by the Fifth Dimsension.
An outstanding song this could have been a chart topper.
Poor side of town was exclusive to Rivers otherwise he covered like a man possessed.
Which in my book makes him more important than most damn singer songwriters

Average rating of 5/5 Carpet Man, 2008-06-10
Before his run of hit singles in the 60s Johnny Rivers had cut a series of flops for at least 5 labels.
In 1964 he carried on from where Trini Lopez had left off and made his first album in a night club,a formula which was to run over a year
His chart topper was Poor side of town-which was possibly his first original song-and others he made first included By the time I get to Phoenix.
His label Soul City had hits with the 5th Dimension and Al Wilson.
Rivers never meant a light in the U K for some odd reason

If Rhino's more comprehensive Anthology 1964-1977 is too rich for your blood, this 10-song collection offers a good introduction to the charismatic singer-guitarist's biggest hits. Along with the immortal P.F. Sloan-penned spy drama "Secret Agent Man," the disc contains such memorable Rivers numbers as the bittersweet "Poor Side of Town," the rollicking Chuck Berry covers "Memphis" and "Maybelline," his soulful readings of the Motown hits "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'" and "The Tracks of My Tears," and his very credible interpretations of the blues standards "Seventh Son" and "The Midnight Special." --Scott Schinder
Average rating of 5/5 A wee dram of pleasure!, 2006-06-10
Johnny Rivers became popular as rock exploded after the British Invasion. He had a distinctive sound that was perfect for the Whiskey A-Go-Go period of rock. Rivers music defies you to sit still. The upbeat beat makes you want to jump and see if you can still do The Pony, The Swim and The Jerk.

Not a complete study, this is more of a good introduction to Rivers. Includes some of the best of this talented perform, especially the rocking sound track for Patrick McGoohan's Secret Agent Man. Also is his big hits The Seventh Song, Where Have All The Flowers Gone?, The Midnight Special, Memphis, the Chuck Berry Standard Maybelline, Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu, and the love ballades, The Poor Side of Town, The Tracks of My Tears.

So discover Johnny if you haven't. Or up date your collection. Great music at a great price.
