A great Album, 2010-02-20
This album was a joy to listen to I have it with me all the time in the car, and if you are into classical you cannot go wrong with this one.....p.s. and it's great value.....

This Rigoletto has been around for so long it might be easy to take it for granted or skip it for a newer set. Don't! It features all three principals in superb voice, as well as pacing from Bonynge that is much heavier on drama than most of us expect from him. Sutherland may sound a bit mature (and mush-mouthed) for Gilda, but not only is she sympathetic, she sings gorgeously. And speaking of gorgeous, those familiar only with the Pavarotti of latter years would be wise to hear him here--this is stylish, full-blooded, Golden Age singing. The beautifully round tone, the easy high notes, the impeccable diction, and the pointed characterisation are unique. Milnes, in the title role, is also in splendid voice, offering smooth legato, brilliant, Verdian ring and real attention to the text. The analogue sound is excellent. No other modern recording offers the visceral thrill of this Rigoletto--go for it. --Robert Levine

This is the Rigoletto of Rigolettos. Sutherland is in supreme voice, not at all too mature-sounding as some reviewers here have commented. The control, poise, ravishing tone, the perfect ethereal trill that seems to go on forever at the end of 'Caro nome' are in a league of their own. Pavarotti gives one of the most ardently beautiful accounts of the Duke's glorious music to be heard on disc. Milnes is a real Rigoletto, magnificent of voice and human, not all malevolence - just as the role should be sung if we are to have sympathy for his tragic plight. No, be assured: this is the most satisfying recording of this classic to be found. They don't have voices like this any more. We should be grateful they were recorded together for posterity, in pristine sound from Decca.

I loved every minute of this.I had forgotten just how good the 1990 Rome concert was.Musical technicalities mean nothing to me,so i can enjoy this for what it is,... great entertainment. All three were on fine form, the behind the scenes of the rehersals were good and showed that the three were good friends and having fun together.it was interesting to see how Zubin Mehtar managed to get two separate orchestras playing as one. All in all, well worth buying.

From the exquisite phrasing of the opening orchestra, this recording establishes itself as the standard by which all others should be measured. Herbert von Karajan's orchestra is no less than perfect, as much a virtuostic performer as the singers, evoking each moment's unique mood. Can there be any doubt that Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni were born to sing Puccini? Their sweet, creamy voices splendidly blend, creating a complete aural portrait of the bohemians' souls. Elizabeth Harwood is a wonderfully high-strung Musetta, with the vocal talent to support her many moods. The greatest recording ever of the world's most beloved opera. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

An excellent recording of a popular opera. It is especially rewarding to hear the late Luciano Pavarotti recorded when in his superlative prime. The whole recording is first class in every respect ,and I would unhesitatingly recommend it to any potential purchaser.

If you are looking for a purely musical Traviata, then this is the one to go for. It captures Sutherland, Pavarotti and Manuguerra in exciting form. Of course, no one makes any attempt at conveying the drama, but that is part of the fun. A bargain at Amazon's price, well recorded, superbly sung, and with an extensive essay and a libretto with full translations.

As always with these Tenors the singing is top-class. I've said it before and I will say it again, to have Voices like this is a GIFT FROM GOD. It was a great loss to the world when Pavarotti died. I highly reccommend this c.d.

Whether you respond to Puccini's tale of cruelty is one thing. The fact that this recording is terrific is quite beyond doubt. This must be one of Sutherland's best performances in the title role, with Pavarotti being, well, Pavarotti - incomperable. Caballe is luxury casting as Lui and Mehta conducts with penache. The best modern recording.

I must admit to feeling a little nostalgic and biased towards this album, as it was my very first classical album bought way back in 1990.

The years have not diminished the appeal that this album possesses. I am still able after twenty odd years to play it from start to finish and feel enriched and happier.

I have listened to many compilation albums since and have found them dis-satisfying. This album collects together the recordings that MADE Pavarotti into the superstar he was and not the popular celebrity songs made during the twilight years of his career.

The listener will hear in this album a powerful and charismatic tenor in love with the music and his audience.

I heartedly recommend this album to old and young alike and wish you the many happy years of listening to it that I have enjoyed!
