It is unlikely that anyone will ever bridge the gap between jazz and classical music with the success that Focus did. Getz regarded it as the most important recording of his life. Eddie Sauter, unique in being first a jazz writer and then a trained classical composer, wrote a series of seven pieces for a small chamber orchestra. He wrote parts for Getz's tenor. Getz wasn't happy with the classical notation and decided to improvise without written music. He had a photographic musical memory and he memorised the music instantly when the chamber group played it through for him. He filled the gaps that had been left for him with the most sublime improvisations that you could imagine. Sauter's writing had been brilliant and the consummation of tenor and chamber group is one of the great moments in jazz. During the period of the recordings Getz's mother died. The chamber unit recorded "Her" in his absence and he came in a day later and improvised to the tape. He obviously had his mother in mind and the result is incredibly moving. The long coda to the piece is one of the most beautiful and heart-stopping passages in the whole of jazz. --Steve Voce
Average rating of 5/5 Getz's Greatest, 2006-03-12
Throughout a long and sometimes troubled career, Getz continued to produce album after album of wonderful, sometimes great music. However, the title of one work crops up time and time again when the subject of the saxophonist's finest offering is discussed: "Focus." Without doubt, Getz's masterpiece, haunting and achingly beautiful.

Average rating of 5/5 Getz and Oscar - fabulous!, 2008-03-06
It's hard to think of anyone who has a tone quite like Stan Getz: breathy yet rich, cool yet passionate, he was unique. Famous for his wonderful bossa nova recordings, he also made some great music with other jazz masters. This album with the Oscar Peterson Trio is particularly fine. Getz's warm, lyrical tone caresses a collection of great tunes with admirable collaboration from one of the finest trios of all time. The lack of a drummer allows an intimate, relaxed feeling to the proceedings, and the results are seriously enjoyable. Highlights include a swinging "Pennies From Heaven" and beautiful ballad work on "Detour Ahead" and "I'm Glad There Is You". All Getz fans and jazz lovers should investigate this CD without delay.

This live follow-up to the surprise blockbuster Getz/Gilberto was inevitable. Interestingly, the original LP release of the October 1964 Carnegie Hall concert focused on separate sets by Getz's quartet (featuring vibist Gary Burton) and Gilberto's trio: each is as meditative and sweetly melancholic as you'd expect. Five bonus tracks bring together Getz, Gilberto, and the latter's wife, Astrud Gilberto, in revisiting their collaboration. --Rickey Wright

I have the old vynal record bought around 35 years ago - the CD is exactly as I remember it all those years ago. brilliant - hours of enjoyment playing it again.
However, I don't remember the live on-stage chit-chat appearing on the CD, which does'nt add anything to the music.

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent music for all ages and tastes. You can't go wrong with this!!!, 2008-10-18
This music album was made in 1963 and it's totally timeless and as fresh in 2008 as when it was first made. I'm 43 and my dad is 70. My 8 year old son and all of us can't get enough of this. Getz's Chega De Saudade (One note samba) is totally the best jazz funk ever and all the other melodies are totally gold as well. You can buy this for yourslef or as a gift for a friend and it's totally priceless - worth a 100 times it's weight in gold. Enjoy!!!!

Artist: Stan Getz, Kenny Barron, Kenny Barron

This album, a series of duets laying the wondrously inquisitive piano of Kenny Barron next to the breathy, half-lit tenor of Stan Getz, was both the last public appearance and the final recording in the life of Getz. Recorded with astonishing clarity live at Copenhagen's Montmartre Café, People Time serves as a passionate coda to the life of this great saxophonist. Many of the tunes seem chosen for their emotional content, as if Getz were aware this might be his swan song. Speculation aside, this is a remarkably gorgeous, exquisitely paced recording. Throughout, Getz and Barron exhibit both a deep understanding of the material as well as sympathetic, truly harmonious playing. Never rushed, never brash, People Time lingers over melodies, fleshing them out and extracting every ounce of feeling. A must-have for fans of both artists. --S. Duda
Average rating of 5/5 StanGetz - Our Last Encounter - "People Time!" ...., 2010-05-22
The inner sleeve notes and tribute from Kenny Barron sum up the pleasure and pain this last recording delivers, simply :- Getz at his best and probably more so because the inner emotion and beauty of a dying man is so gracefully played out in all the tracks, First song for Ruth and Soul Eyes particularly.

As a pro Tenor player I really got Getz in these tracks, it's a real cry from within. I've studied much of his work, and recently I played "First Song" for my girlfiend in an underground car park a note for note performance... and she cried... somehow the notes had become words. It always brings a lump to my throat because it is such a wonderfully hypnotic musical statement, a kind of thankyou, from the heart for listening.
The harmonisation and intonation of his unique style and influence from Lester Young rings out. It seems like Lester was looking down over him and smiling..... "this is your last gig dude even though you hurt you simply got to play it out!" The complimentary keywork from Kenny Barron is also very moving and completes the canvas. "People Time" is all about emotion and an inner strength of achievement, it's a last great hurrah from a man who ranks as one of the greatest exponents of the tenor sax ever; and whether you blow the sax or not this double CD is a must for anyone who appreciates the very best in music.

Artist: Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim

Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remains the only jazz album to reach number one in the pop charts. In fact, the story goes that Getz had to push for the release of Getz/Gilberto since the company did not want to compete with its own hit; it was a good thing he did. Getz/Gilberto, which featured composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, not only yielded the hit "Girl from Ipanema" (sung by Astrud Gilberto, the guitarist's wife, who had no professional experience) but also "Corcovado" ("Quiet Night")--an instant standard, and the definitive version of "Desafinado". Getz/Gilberto spent 96 weeks in the charts and won four Grammys. It remains one of those rare cases in popular music where commercial success matches artistic merit. Bossa nova's "cool" aesthetic--with its understated rhythms, rich harmonies, and slightly detached delivery--had been influenced, in part, by cool jazz. Gilberto in particular was a Stan Ge...
