George Benson
A very fine collection of George Benson's songs floating between smooth R'n'B and soft jazz, 2010-03-01
This new UK Rhino compilation features slick, smooth, romantic songs that were recorded by George Benson for Warner Bros after he began to emphasize his highly attractive vocal style rather than the virtuoso guitar style that had previously made him famous in jazz circles.
This transition occurred when Benson's cover version of Leon Russell's "This Masquerade" became an unexpected top ten US single for Benson in 1976. The latter title featured Benson's new trademark: scatting along with a single-string guitar solo. Afterwards, he quietly, and very successfully, developed this approach on a string of best-selling albums and singles. This material, floating between smooth R'n'B and soft jazz, brought him a lot of well-deserved commercial success.
The album under review includes 20 tracks and features a string of hits and well known songs played in the style mentioned above.
This 20-track CD overview will surely delight those listeners who are mostly attracted by this side of Benson's artistry. If you decide to purchase it, you will surely not regret it.
Fans tempted by a wider ranging overview of this artist's long career should definitely consider buying "Anthology" instead. "Anthology" is a 2-CD, 32-track multi-labels overview tracing Benson's work from 1964 to 1998. This set was released, in 2000, on the Warner Archives/Rhino imprint.
"Anthology" features 20 tracks issued on Warner Bros., including 11 of the 20 tracks featured on "Classic Love Songs". The greatest hits are there, of course, but "Anthology" emphasizes the later part of Benson's Warner Bros. recordings. These later tracks are, actually, of a higher standard.
Moreover, it provides well-deserved space to highlights from Benson's considerable guitar achievements. At the current price, it has more variety and represents a better and cheaper option to the single disc under review.

Michael Buble
Pop's rush to raid the cradle continues with this promising, self-titled debut by 25-year-old Canadian singer Michael Bublé. And while the young vocal star's good looks are smart enough for a boy band, his muse seems to have sprung from a more sassy and compelling musical era. Mentored by Paul Anka (whose 1950s hit "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is covered in dreamy, cabaret fashion here), Bublé sings in the orbits of Darin and Sinatra, covering swing epoch gems ("Come Fly with Me", "The Way You Look Tonight", "That's All") and rock-era standards (Van Morrison's "Moondance", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Brothers Gibb, Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love") with equal aplomb. David Foster's production is typically slick and played to the back row of the bleachers, but it's informed by smart contexts provided by such arrangers as Johnny Mandel, Randy Waldman and Mike Melvoin. If the choices of material are sometimes staid and predictable, they also give the singer a crucial framework for building toward something more challenging; his is a bright future. --Jerry McCulley

Miles Davis
The greatest album of all time?!, 2010-02-07 I only recently discovered this awesome album and now can't stop playing it! ... Ironically I used to hate jazz and even Miles - Doh, what a twit I was - ...
It swings sublimely, makes me happy and lifts my soul each time 'So What' kicks off! ... The rhythm section is just so gobsmackingly superb and each solo cuts in raising one to a yet higher level! ... Phew, we are surely 'not worthy' but I for one am eternally grateful to Miles and his boys for this masterpiece!
I'm now on a happy journey of discovery finding all the other tracks by these artists that I have missed out on all these years ...
Thanks Miles!

Still enjoying themselves after all these years , me too!, 2010-03-06 I've been listening to and watching The Chieftains now for well over 30 years , first saw them at Leeds Uni in the '70s.This is just another wonderful page from their book of musical pleasure. They have never stopped discovering the rich traditions of World Music and it has never seemed to be anything less than a pleasure for them to play the tunes of Ireland and other countries and to work with other musicians.
A really enjoyable CD which will, I suspect, grow on me even more as I find out about the San Patricios.

Irresponsibly me, 2010-03-01 I am afraid to say that I loved this album - I have had to spend a lot of time in the car since buying this and am happy to have it going again and again. Track 2 is so 'salsa' that I find it difficult to drive whilst 'salsa-ing' in my seat'! Some tracks get fast forwarded - but on the whole a wonderfully diverse bit of entertainment. If only I could have Michael in the car with me!

Michael Buble
Michael Buble's assured debut and the tireless year of globe-trotting touring he spent promoting it elevated the 20-something Vancouver native into the first rank of pop crooner revivalists. His sophomore studio follow-up largely turns on the same formula that helped make his considerable vocal prowess so attractive to mainstream audiences, mixing the nigh flawless, if expected Sinatra-channelling ("I've Got You Under My Skin") with more playful and inviting renditions of pop standards like the Gershwin's "A Foggy Day in London Town," "Feeling Good," "Try A Little Tenderness" and Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin." But it's the eclectic mix of more contemporary material the singer seasons them with--apt tribute to Buble hero Bobby Darin--that keeps him walking the narrow tightrope between artistic intrigue (a blues-tinged vamp of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "How Sweet It Is," Leon Russell's lovely "Song For You," with a guest turn by Chris Botti) and the kitsch-laden abyss ("Quando, Quando, Quando"'s Euro-centric duet with Nelly Furtado, a ring-a-ding-fling with the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" that echoes fellow Canadian crooner/rival Matt Dusk's more successful flirtation wi...
Excellent service., 2010-01-15 The CD arrived the next day in perfect condition. Would recommend this supplier 100%. Would not hesitate to use again.

Jamie Cullum
Now officially anointed as the new Dudley Moore, being a talented British pianist about to wed a much taller blonde, Jamie Cullum returns after a four year break with The Pursuit, his fifth and best album yet. A gleeful and deft big band version of Cole Porter’s classic "Just One Of Those Things" kicks off proceedings with a new Cullum-composed introduction, an indicator of his current confidence. And on this evidence it’s warranted. First single, the soft-rocking "I’m All Over It" deserved greater success, while the jaunty "Wheels", inspired by the credit crunch, neatly encapsulates the varied moods of The Pursuit. A funereal reading of "If I Ruled the World" owing far more to Elvis Costello than Harry Secombe, is followed by "You and Me Are Gone", a tribute to Louis Prima’s turn on the soundtrack of The Jungle Book that’s as much fun as its inspriation. A cover of Rihanna’s hit "Please Don’t Stop The Music" is as vulnerable and full of longing as the original even as he makes it his own, yet "Mixtape", a tribute to the varied music Cullum loves, is an upbeat, even extravagant pop song not miles from Ben Folds. "We Run Things" is slighter--...
Jamie Cullum - The Pursuit, 2010-02-23 Fantastic Album, great mix of more traditional and contemporary tracks, thoroughly recommend if you like his other material.

Dave Brubeck Quartet
Boasting the first jazz instrumental to sell a million copies, the Paul Desmond-penned "Take Five", Time Out captures the celebrated jazz quartet at the height of both its popularity and its powers. Recorded in 1959, the album combines superb performances by pianist Brubeck, alto saxophonist Desmond, drummer Joe Morrello and bassist Gene Wright. Along with "Take Five", the album features another one of the group's signature compositions, "Blue Rondo a la Turk". Though influenced by the West Coast-cool school, Brubeck's greatest interest and contribution to jazz was the use of irregular meters in composition, which he did with great flair. Much of the band's appeal is due to Desmond, whose airy tone and fluid attack often carried the band's already strong performances to another level. Together, he and Brubeck proved one of the most potent pairings of the era. --Fred Goodman
THE standard by which many others are judged, 2010-02-18 Ladies and Gentleman, this is music.
Not only a masterclass in musicianship and song writing, this is a demonstration of audio recording that has to be heard to be believed. Recorded in 1959 apparently, well you could have fooled me, 'Time Out' sounds fresher and more vibrant than a majority of albums i have bought in the past decade. You can hear the breath on the reed of the Sax, the timbre of the cymbals, the crisp snap of stick on snare, the buzz of the bass string... you get the picture. You can also hear some hiss from the original tapes but this simple adds further to the atmosphere that this album strongly carries. Fortunate enough to have grown up in an era when vinyl was still a mainstream format, when listening to this CD, i can picture in my mind the evocative image of the original LP spinning round on the turntable.
Now available for the price of a CD single or a rare download, this remastered edition of the album is an absolute no brainer purchase, and is worth the price of entry alone for the albums most well known track Take Five. It is the most well known track for a reason, it is a masterpiece that still sounds fresh over 50 years after its original release. The linear notes describe musical time, experimental timing ideas and complex rhythm changes to break the trad jazz template of 4\4 time, and it would be far too easy to repeat these notes and appear to be knowledgeable but i won't. Whilst it is nice to know these things, this information is not strictly necessary to appreciate and understand this album. If you want modern reference points, well by listening to this album many a modern pop piano artist are revealed to simply be pale imitators of the art. On this record you can hear the influence and roots of James brown and his flavour of Funk, the House music keyboard sound, the list goes on.
If you are new to the genre of Jazz, then 'Time Out' alongside 'Mingus Ah Um', 'Kind of Blue' and 'Something Else' is a good place to start, and quickly becomes a clear benchmark by which others are judged (as are the others). Time Out is achingly cool because it wasn't trying to be, sublimely recorded and if ever an album deserved the title of a classic or indeed dare I say it a masterpiece, this has to be it.
Enjoy.
