Oh my god I'm reviewing Barry Manilow, 2010-04-13 I cannot in all good concience review a C.D. by the nasally challenged Mr Manilow. His tones sent me into suicidal rages as a youngster when my mother danced around the lounge, doing the spring cleaning and singing to copa cabana.
However! It put a great smile on my mother-in-laws face and she has promised under pain of death that the cd will not venture out of its case without the accompaning headphones.

Tom Jones
Long qualified for a state pension and generally recognised as a national treasure, Tom Jones is in no need of an unnecessary makeover, which is probably why 24 Hours turns out to be such a relaxed collection. Relaxed is a relative term for the Welsh veteran--Jones still bellows like a man trying to make himself heard over a rowdy crowd. But the best moments on 24 Hours, such as a terrifyingly spirited take of "I’m Alive", originally performed by Tommy James and the Shondells, and first single "If He Should Ever Leave You", a rather knowing if undeniably catchy pastiche of the supper club soul that made his name, could only be the work of one man. The stark title track enters Nick Cave territory while "The Road", a heartfelt if somewhat overdue apology to Jones’s loyally obscure wife Linda, will either repel or seduce. The louche "Sugar Daddy", penned by U2 no less, rather exalts Jones’s reputation as an ageing lothario, even as he seems determined to shake it off. The odd clunker aside (notably the rather naff "In Style and Rhythm") 24 Hours, produced by Future Cut, a team of studio bods half his age, is an enjoyably effective collection, filling a previ...
Tom Jones 24 Hours, 2010-02-10 Tom Jones had been around 40 years and had only every sparked the vaguest interest from me. Until this brilliant album came out which is still in the CD player over a year later.
The first single was one of the best tracks of 2008, If He Should Ever Leave You, and is still the standout track but the whole album is brilliantly classy. Highly recommended.

Ennio Morricone
Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffe's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for "Gabriel's Oboe" and "The Mission". Not as over-the-top as his well-known spaghetti western scores, The Mission shows Morricone at his dramatic best. --Heidi MacDonald
