CHANGED PRESENTATION?, 2010-02-14 The copy I bought just after it's release does indeed contain a hardback book. The discs themselves are housed in cardboard sleeves resembling the paper sleeves of old 78s in yet another hardback book. The set also included a pack of 4 postcards. I can only assume, that at some point the presentation was changed to what it is now.

Jack Teagarden
JAZZ LEGEND'S TRIUMPHS, 2004-03-29 This triple set celebrates the career of the admired musician during his most productive period from 1928-1947. With warmly unique trombone style heavily influenced by the blues but mixed with a hint of Dixieland, Teagarden set the standard for all his contemporaries. By occasionally adding vocals, his personality developed in a similar way to Louis Armstrong. His links with many band formations and musicians; Goodman, Eddie Condon, Paul Whiteman, Joe Venuti, Coleman Hawkins and Bobby Hackett: singers - Lee Wiley, Hot Lips Page, Johnny Mercer amongst them: songs, I'VE GOT A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES, THE SHEIK OF ARABY, THAT'S A SERIOUS THING and ST LOUIS BLUES, provide just a few clues to what is contained amongst the 72 tracks which never fails to entertain and boasts great sound quality.

Ben Webster
It was the critic Leonard Feather who dubbed Ben Webster "the Clark Gable of the tenor saxophone, at once a brute and a hero". The opening two tracks of this 1953 vintage recording proves the point with a breathy, caressing "Tenderly" followed by an up-tempo "Jive At Six" with Webster sinking his teeth into the reed to produce an urgent, gutsy sound. The album couples the first two sessions Webster did for Verve producer Norman Granz, who made sure that the tenor saxophonist had colleagues of an equal stature. On all 11 tracks Webster is backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio plus a drummer and on five of them he is joined by Harry Edison and Benny Carter for some excellent mainstream jazz. The album contains the previously unissued minor key blues "Poutin'" and two takes each of "Bounce Blues" and a gorgeous ballad, "That's All". Webster was a unique player who had complete control of the tenor and was capable of bringing his sound down to a whisper and then allowing it to die away leaving just a vibrating column of air in the instrument. This album demonstrates the artistry of a true giant at peak form. --Steve Voce
The best, by the master, 2010-02-09 I must admit that I don't believe that there is another tenor sax player who can play the sweet mellow sounds of a ballad better than Ben Webster. Some people might dispute that Ben should be called King of the tenors, but I would think that would be because they have another artist they favour more.
This CD, King of tenors, is a good mixture of tracks, played with his great ability to comfort his listeners with soft comforting sounds and excite them with his drive and verve. But most of all because his music comes straight from the heart, Ben does not set out to confuse the listener, but to make them feel safe and warm within the sound of the "King of Instruments"
A most admirable recording and a must for serious collectors, I would reccommend purchasing this CD as the star of your collection.
It should be said that Ben Webster is ranked among the top seven jazz tenor saxophonists of all time. Artists like John Coltrane, Lester young, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz.
I guess that this is the height that all saxophonists aspire to. Some will get there some won't.

Charlie Christian
AWESOME!, 2009-03-29 Despite what others are saying, this is truly an awesome cd! Why? Because it contains a track listing of some of the best jazz and bebop playing ever with Charlie Christian on guitar playing probably at his best recorded at Minton's Play House in Harlem during May, 1941 after hours jam sessions. At this club and on such recordings as this one, modern Jazz was born. This selection here is deemed to be a very valuable title to own if you are into Jazz. The audio will be in mono this especially is not surprising as it was originally recorded on a portable player by an audience member! This recording has a real live feel and vibe; you can also hear a noisey audience shouting and screaming in the background with Charlie's fluid guitar lines effortlessly flowing all over it almost transporting you there. Do not miss out on this recording because it's becoming rare and collectible. Also, check out Charlie Christian 'Guitar Wizard' playing with Benny Goodman's Sextet.

Count Basie
It's called the Count Basie Story and, like previous proper boxes, this collection tells the story in chronological order. It starts with "Shoe Shine Boy", from the 1936 session that introduced the names of both Basie himself and the great tenor saxophonist, Lester Young, to the world. Many years later veteran producer John Hammond described this as "the most perfect recording session I was ever involved with". From this auspicious beginning, the story unfolds to show how Basie's band, with its matchless rhythm section, taught the swing era how to swing. Through numbers such as "One O'Clock Jump", "Swinging the Blues" and "Jumping at the Woodside", Basie's amazing cast of soloists--Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Herschel Evans and many more--influenced the entire history of jazz. As the years passed, the band became slicker and used more elaborate arrangements, but never lost the essential simplicity of its approach nor its solid grounding in the blues. Listen to "Harvard Blues", a masterpiece from 1941, for proof of that, with Jimmy Rushing's high, intense voice, Don Byas's silky tenor saxophone and the majestic harmonies of Buster Harding's arrangement....
The Wonderful Count Basie, 2009-04-11 Excellent quality, 4 discs, 99 recordings. I am listening to, 'The Dirty Dozens,' as I write this, number 21 on Disc 1,'One O'Clock Jump'. Some music just resonates! When I first heard this, I kept repeating it. It just makes me happy! Toes tingle, makes me NEED to get up and share in the joy of good, v. v. good music. Wunderschon, beautiful! G.I. Stomp, [Red Bank Boogie],brings that Swing back into my home, and reminds me of seeing my Dad, [just come in from the fields, muddy boots and all, dance mum round the kitchen table [barefoot and Fred Astaire could not compare!] to a piece of Glen Miller, who he saw and whose music he marched to in WW2. That moment marks when and where my love of Jazz started. Other favourites are 'Easy Does It' [Jive at 5] and 'Let me see', 'Dupree Blues.' All good stuff! Feeds the soul as well as the ears, heart, mind and body. What more can I say? I enjoy it. Jive at 5 disc has the most recordings that I enjoy, but everyone is different, eh?

Woody Herman
Definitely a Winner, 2003-07-01 I first had a copy on vinyl of the Woody's Winners album about twenty years ago. I then made the fatal error of lending it to someone and have not seen it or him since! To finally find the album re released on CD is fantastic and listening to it again it still remains in my opinion one of the best and most exciting Big Band albums ever recorded. As a trumpet player myself I may be a bit biased but the stars of the recording are the trumpet section led by the late great Bill Chase. The opening track,23 Red is a phenomenal chase (no pun) with three of the trumpet players trying to blow each other off the stand, and that pace never lets up throughout the album. There is excitement in every number, all the sections sound really tight and together and as well as all the fantastic trumpet solos the sax soloists Sal Nistico and Gary Klein are on top form. This is a live recording and the feeling conveyed throughout is of a band who are really enjoying themselves. The same band recorded much of the same material in a concert Live from Antibes a year or so later and whilst that album is very good it doesn't quite convey the same sense of excitement as Woodys Winners and the trumpets don't quite hit their solos with the same precision and swing. As far as the Jazz Hoot album is concerned, The Duck and Boopsie are particularly naff. Sidewinder could do without the vocal from the leader and Mardis Gras sounds a bit like a sequence dance for Come Dancing! Apart from that the rest of the album is okay with more great trumpet work from Bill Chase on I Can't Get Started and good versions of Satin Doll,Watermelon Man and Jazz Hoot. I am not convinced, from the sound quality of these last tracks, that they were recorded at the same time as the Woody's Winners tracks. The trumpet section sounds more distant and with more reverb. I would have been quite happy paying the same money for the Woody's Winners CD without Jazz Hoot. As both albums are on the one CD I shall just programme the CD player to start at track 11. The one album alone is good enough to give the whole package a five star rating.

Artie Shaw
The Very Best of Artie Shaw has two unbeatable advantages. Firstly, RCA own the original metal masters and so, in theory, they can get the cleanest transfers possible. Secondly, Artie Shaw himself made the selections. Who is going to gainsay the man himself when it comes to choosing his very best? As one might expect of such a maverick, there is solid good taste here (he's included the one commercial side Billie Holiday made with him during her brief stay in the band) along with the odd raised eyebrow (no "Frenesi", no "Blues in the Night", no "Traffic Jam", no "Serenade to a Savage"). RCA US have broken the habit of a lifetime and made good, sharp and clean transfers from their originals, making this perhaps the best-sounding reissue of this material. It's also a credit that "Star Dust", "Begin the Beguine", "Nightmare", "Concerto for Clarinet" (both parts) and "Chantez-les-bas" are included in the disc's 68 minutes. It's a cliché, but if you're only ever going to buy one Artie Shaw CD (and that'd be a pity), this should be it. --Keith Shadwick

Young & Wilson
Pres and Teddy, Teddy and Pres, 2010-05-27 Another album bought in the early 70`s in vinyl and again as a CD. I can`t tell the difference in terms of sound quality. Of all music bought since nearly 40 years ago this one album is my most played. You just put it on fairly loud and listen to a few blokes play in such a relaxed yet swingin fashion. Lester just weaves lovely webs of music only to be replaced by Teddy Wilson getting a timbre from the piano I have never heard anyone else achieve. Quite fitting because Lester Young made the tenor sound something unlike any other. I wonder if these guys would have had any inkling of how much their sounds would be revered so many years later? This another "jazz" album that is, for me, constrained by that name. This is universal music. Oh that more people coouldn`t hear it.

Benny Goodman
This amazing cross-catalogue collection is able to embody samples of all Goodman's music from its spiky beginnings in 1927 through to his experiments with bebop in 1949. Despite being more than 70 years old, the first five tracks show Goodman's clarinet at its hottest, with support from Jack Teagarden, Bud Freeman, Adrian Rollini, Fats Waller and Muggsy Spanier. Then come the string of blazing swing-era big band classics, starting with Henderson's chart of "King Porter Stomp" and climaxing with the long and modernistic Eddie Sauter arrangement "Benny Rides Again" from 1940. In between come the small groups, dazzling from the quartet with Lionel Hampton and Teddy Wilson through to the powerful "Air Mail Special" ("Good Enough To Keep") with Charlie Christian and Cootie Williams and "Rachel's Dream" with Red Norvo and Wilson again. "Undercurrent Blues" features tenor saxist Wardell Gray and shows what a remarkable span of music the supposedly conservative Goodman embraced during his unique career. This is a remarkable jazz benchmark and the 77 minutes of music benefit from excellent sound quality. Apart from the Goodman classics, there are tracks that will delight the specialised col...
Swinging, 2006-03-12 Definately worth buying - good sound and recording quality and a nice range of tracks. It has some nice 20's/30's Jazz tracks including the recognisable Sing, Sing, Sing and Waitin' For Kate. This is an area of Jazz that seems to be overlooked at the moment but it is upbeat and a real joy to listen to. A short review but that reflects lack of faults on the CD's part and I wasn't dissapointed with my purchase.
