Artist: Stan Kenton

Average rating of 5/5 Kenton In Concert Setting Light To Some Standards, 2001-05-24
'Send In The Clowns' is probably one of the finest later Kenton performances. 'Street Of Dreams'has an a stunning alto solo. 'My Funny Valentine', 'Body & Soul' and Rhapsody In Blue' are all high standard, well crafted orchestrations with fine performances. 'Tiara' and 'Too Shy To Say' are boring and irrelevant 'stocking-fillers'. Overall rating?? Definately a 'buy' for Kenton fans.

Artist: Count Basie

Average rating of 5/5 A brilliant record featuring world class swing, 2002-03-21
This is an absolutely must-have album for the serious Basie fan. Here the brilliance of Basie himself and his musicians is combined with the near perfect arrangements by Sammy Nestico. The hard hitting swing of Bluesville and 88 Basie Street are so perfectly complemented by the softer tunes (by Basie) with a smaller set up.

Artist: Coleman Hawkins

Average rating of 4/5 Very enjoyable, 2009-12-17
The Genius of Coleman Hawkins is one of those albums that makes you feel good; leaves you with a smile and warm glow inside. It's generally undemanding, in a way that jazz so often isn't, but I mean that in a good way. You can enjoy this for what it is - a relaxed session between Hawkins and Oscar Peterson and his trio, which represents an aspect of jazz that feels like it's from another time.

There are, perhaps, a few too many slow numbers which gives the album an overall bias towards ballads, but depending on your mood, that's probably not a bad thing. The discreet but swinging accompaniment from Peterson and friends reminds the listener once again of the huge talents Oscar Peterson had not just as a solo artist, but also as a sensitive sideman, willing to let the star shine when the occasion demanded. Hawkins sounds on fine form, his characteristic yakety sax vibrato on display perhaps a little too often, but generally it all works well.

The Verve Master Editions releases of their jazz classics are something of a mixed blessing. On the plus side, you get detailed liner notes and decent sound quality from the re-mastering; the downside - too much repeat or out-take material that detracts from the sense of mood and occasion from the original recordings. A few extra tracks here - and some mono takes of stereo material -really don't add that much to a mix that's enjoyable enough to stand on its own. Nevertheless, a fine album.

Artist: Duke Ellington

Average rating of 5/5 Festival or not, Duke Shines Brightly, 2008-07-30
Whether the piece on this album was written for (then quite novel) festival circuit, or it existed in the Ellington book for years ("Perdido", "Things Ain't What They Used to Be"), this studio session of the festival repertoire gives some brilliant music. The bend is in excellent form, with Clark Terry (check out glorious "Perdido"), Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Hamilton and other jazz giants giving significant individual contributions...

The Sam Woodyard-Jimmy Johnson drum battle might not be to everyone's taste, but it's only a part of the Columbia's "Festival Session" album experience - all in all, this is not any less subtle a record just because the music was performed for festival audiences as well.

Additional pleasure of this album is the inclusion of previously unreleased bonus tracks of "V.I.P.'s Boogie" and "Jam with Sam", completing the CD quite nicely... Orchestra is in a fine form throughout, with Ellington leading the proceedings in his inimitable way, complete with shouting, laughing and name calling...

Average rating of 5/5 A Lovely Album, 2009-12-11
One of the greatest saxophone players, Ben Webster's ballad playing came to its full maturity in the 1950's and this relaxed, late night, album - along with the quartet session with Art Tatum - shows it at its very finest. The string writing by Ralph Burns and Billy Strayhorn is exquisite and provides a perfect backdrop to some of the most beautiful sax playing on record. In addition to this, a lovely quartet session with Teddy Wilson, Ray Brown and Jo Jones is included as are various alternate takes.

As an added bonus, a 'with strings' session by Harry Carney fills out the second disc. The mood is similar, the arrangements are by Ralph Burns, and Ellington's great baritone player's solos are things of joy and wonder.

A lovely album, which has lost none of its freshness in more than half a century, it is beautifully recorded and has been excellently remastered from the original master-tapes. Enjoy!
