Oscar Pettiford
After Jimmy Blanton the next most important style- setting bass player in jazz was Oscar Pettiford. His mid-40s work is displayed on 22 of the 23 tracks here (due to a mistake in the selection, the two-part "Frankie And Johnny" by Duke Ellington on the CD features Junior Raglin on bass, not Pettiford). Pettiford was in at the very beginning of bebop and co-led a quintet with Dizzy Gillespie that had a very youthful Max Roach on drums. That particular unit, with six additional musicians, backs Coleman Hawkins on Disorder At The Border. Pettiford had all the musical attributes necessary for greatness. His intonation was perfect, the tone rich and commanding and the choice of notes imaginative. His solos had the authority of a horn player at a time when bass players were seldom expected to play solos of great importance. The Topaz CD reflects the enormous amount of talent then on the New York jazz scene as Oscar appears with groups led by such men as Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Billy Eckstine. There are also two Duke Ellington titles--"Suddenly It Jumped" and "Swamp Fire", which are features for the bassist. This is an excellent survey of this singular musician's...
