Buddy Rich
A truly great Buddy Rich album, a real must buy C.D. !, 2000-10-17 This 1967 studio album clearly shows why Buddy and his band were selling out clubs and theatres across the States, (soon to be the world), with a really exciting sound and new modern arrangements.Buddy really sounds at home on this album swinging the band through all the top tunes presented here, from the opening track 'Away We Go', to the ridiculously fast brush playing on 'Standing In A Hammock', to the multi-time signatured 'Diablous'.This album really will excite any Big Band fan who has a pulse ! Buddy has a few breaks here and there but no huge drum solo's, all you have here is a superb band playing out and taking the Big Band sound to a younger audience. I also like the fact that this is a studio album rather than another 'live' album, this gives the album a different feel up against 'Big Swing Face' and 'The Swingin' New Big Band' albums. If you own those two albums then 'The New One' is a REAL must to buy, you will not be disapointed I can assure you, and drummers should check out his fills on the track 'Machine' and try to keep up with the time signature changes on 'Diablous', I promise you it will drive you crazy ! (For the people who do not like the band playing funky-poppy numbers then you will be happy to note that these tunes all swing, no grooves on this album at all). A truly classic Big Band record with some of the best Big Band Drumming you will EVER hear in your life, do your-self a favour and buy a copy today !

Gene Krupa +
The Masters., 2008-09-30 Drum battles between Krupa and Rich were always exciting, but this has something more.It is not a battle, more a collaboration. Although both swing-based their styles are very different.Rich was an unleashed monster whose subtler touches were often overlooked, whilst Krupa was the most musical of drummers who also had a magic that made the simplest beat something special. The two drummers loved each other, and it shows on this album.Their individual tracks are great but Bernie's Tune is the killer.Free-flowing,inventive and exciting drumming leading in to great solos from the guys in the ensemble. When the other musicians kick in Krupa remains to back them and then Rich takes over for the final choruses. This section shows most markedly their two styles....Krupa driving along with bass drum accents that are a joy,and then Buddy taking over and using more "top". And listen to how the ensemle reacts.Great solos from swingers like Roy Eldridge, modernists like Oscar Peterson, and be-boppers like Dizzy Gillespie showing that good jazz is good jazz regardless of style. These are masters at work.

Joan Baez
Joan Baez sings not only folk but rock, country and gospel, 2005-03-29 Joan Baez proves she is way more than "just" a folksinger on this 1970 album, which was recorded around the time she performed at Woodstock. Baez sings "No Expectations" written by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards as well as the title track, "One Day at a Time," by Willie Nelson. At the same time the album contains several original compositions by Baez, including one of her very best in "Sweet Sir Galahad," along with old union songs like "Joe Hill." Still, in the final analysis this album tilts towards Nashville, which makes sense since that was primarily where Baez was finding her musicians. That explains why the very best songs on the album end up being the countrified "Long Black Veil" and "Take Me Back to the Sweet Sunny South," along with the gospel like "Carry it On" and "Ghetto." There is no reason to be surprised that Baez is a fine gospel singer (or country singer, or pop singer, or, even, in a pinch, a folk singer). "One Day at a Time" might be the most unusual Joan Baez album given this varied collection of musical styles, but that may well be the reason that it is one of the best.

The Drum Battle won, 2010-05-11 My grandad used to play this to my brother and I, being a semi-professional drummer himself during his youth, his appreciation of this classic work of art was infectious; my brother and I, now (nearly) middle aged, both with families and children had the opportunity to spend some time together recently. Driving down country roads of our youth, windows down and the Drum Battle at full volume in our rent-a-car was a moment of pure nostalgic pleasure.

The Buddy Rich Big Band
Yet another awesome Buddy Rich album!, 2008-12-24 My first Buddy Rich album was "Mercy, Mercy" and it got me hooked on the fabulous sound of the band. When I brough this album I was just shocked by just how good the band is! I never realised a band could be this good. There is times when the band is blowing your brains out across the back wall then seconds later it's down to nothing more than a whisper. This album has one of the best examples of that in the tune "Willowcrest". It builds up after another fabulous solo section into the biggest swing you've ever heard. It's swingin' like a dolce of salts on speed, then it just drops. Fabulous arranging! Half the style comes from the band itself but the rest comes from the arrangements it picks and Rich has nack of picking the best arrangers! The album starts out with a very powerful arrangement of the Beatle's tune "Norwegian Wood" which is one hell of a concert opener!
To show the versatility of the Rich family, he has his daughter Cathy sing "The Beat Goes On" which is bang on in the groove and makes Cathy sound awesome! It is a very long album (18 tracks - 70 mins) which will keep you entertained. The problem of this is it might get a bit samey for some (not for me mind). With this in mind the best tracks are definitely the first 18! My favourite on this one is "Big Swing Face". It promotes everything I love about the band, smooth but very powerful jazz!
