Young Lester
masterpiece, 2008-06-10 What a gigantic group!
Still very much in their prime, many of these jazz giants are old musical and personal friends. For instance, Jo Jones (dm) and Freddie Greene (g) were a vital part of Basie's rhythm machine in the hay-day of Young's tenure with the orchestra; Eldridge (tp) and Young both participated in beautiful Teddy Wilson-Billie Holiday recordings, Young made a perfect quartet album with Wilson (p), Ramey (b) and Jones (Pres and Teddy); Jones and Young (at one number joined by Eldridge) were guests on Count Basie rightly famous "At Newport" reunion album (Count Basie at Newport), Roy played with Young on numerous other occasions as well (including JATP encounters and Young's swan song "Laughin' to keep from cryin'"...
Lester Young had some of his peaks in the 50s (check out also his work with Oscar Peterson from the period - With the Oscar Peterson Trio, particularly when surrounded by the likeminded jazz giants of the previous era and Vic Dickenson is another reason to get this gem: he plays really beautifully throughout this fantastic album... If you're into hot and gentle mainstream, into swing, Lester Young, Roy Eldridge, Vic Dickenson...YOU MUST HAVE THIS!
Why did I wait so long to buy it, I keep asking myself in disbelief. Lyrical and ballad-oriented component of this album prevails and, since these artists have beautiful sound, this will make this album quite accessible to audiences who otherwise don't necessarily concentrate on jazz (for instance to the Diana Krall and Norah Jones crowd).

Lester Young
The Lester Young Story is a masterly selection from the work of a great tenor saxophonist, excellently packaged, with an informative booklet. This four-disc box set of classic recordings follows his career from his very first session, a small band date with Count Basie in 1936, to a star-studded live concert with, among others, Charlie Parker, Roy Eldridge, Buddy Rich, in 1949. This isn't the whole story, of course, because Young lived and worked for a further 10 years, but it covers the period when he was at the height of his powers and is packed with glorious music. To pick out just a few gems--there is the amazing "Lady Be Good"; the record that first announced his arrival to an astonished jazz world and five numbers in which he partners the young Billie Holiday with exquisite delicacy and taste. Elsewhere there are most of his show-stopping solos with Basie's band, in numbers like "Tickle Toe"; and "Taxi War Dance" and a generous selection from his informal small-band sessions with players such as Buck Clayton, Dickie Wells and Charlie Christian, including a rare extract from the soundtrack of the movie Jammin' The Blues. The last disc consists of tracks from Y...

Kenny Burrell
the sublime bluesy burrell, 2009-05-20 This is one of those fabulous jazz albums that you can come home to after work, pour yourself a gin and tonic, and just lose yourself in. Turn it up loud and bask in all the loveliness: 'Tres Palabras', 'Montono Blues' and 'Its getting dark' all stand out, but the tracks between are quietly smashing too. And what a dream-team combination: Kenny Burrell inspired on guitar, Coleman Hawkins giving it some welly on sax, Tommy Flanagan heavenly on the piano and Ray Baretto weaving it through with some smart rhythms. Recorded on a rainy september day in New Jersey in 1962, these musicians are on real form. Swinging, sexy, soaring and soothing: buy this and enjoy it for the rest of your life.

Ben Webster
It was the critic Leonard Feather who dubbed Ben Webster "the Clark Gable of the tenor saxophone, at once a brute and a hero". The opening two tracks of this 1953 vintage recording proves the point with a breathy, caressing "Tenderly" followed by an up-tempo "Jive At Six" with Webster sinking his teeth into the reed to produce an urgent, gutsy sound. The album couples the first two sessions Webster did for Verve producer Norman Granz, who made sure that the tenor saxophonist had colleagues of an equal stature. On all 11 tracks Webster is backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio plus a drummer and on five of them he is joined by Harry Edison and Benny Carter for some excellent mainstream jazz. The album contains the previously unissued minor key blues "Poutin'" and two takes each of "Bounce Blues" and a gorgeous ballad, "That's All". Webster was a unique player who had complete control of the tenor and was capable of bringing his sound down to a whisper and then allowing it to die away leaving just a vibrating column of air in the instrument. This album demonstrates the artistry of a true giant at peak form. --Steve Voce
The best, by the master, 2010-02-09 I must admit that I don't believe that there is another tenor sax player who can play the sweet mellow sounds of a ballad better than Ben Webster. Some people might dispute that Ben should be called King of the tenors, but I would think that would be because they have another artist they favour more.
This CD, King of tenors, is a good mixture of tracks, played with his great ability to comfort his listeners with soft comforting sounds and excite them with his drive and verve. But most of all because his music comes straight from the heart, Ben does not set out to confuse the listener, but to make them feel safe and warm within the sound of the "King of Instruments"
A most admirable recording and a must for serious collectors, I would reccommend purchasing this CD as the star of your collection.
It should be said that Ben Webster is ranked among the top seven jazz tenor saxophonists of all time. Artists like John Coltrane, Lester young, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and Stan Getz.
I guess that this is the height that all saxophonists aspire to. Some will get there some won't.
