Christmastime is a time when families get together and sing a few old favorites to raise some seasonal cheer. That's exactly the spirit you'll hear on the Jackson family's holiday gathering--albeit with a few more eye-popping performances than in most home get-togethers. Michael, Jermaine, Tito, and their sibs flash energy and enthusiasm aplenty on old-time faves such as "Up on the Housetop" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." And even when they take things down a notch for ballads like "Christmas Won't Be the Same" and "Give Love on Christmas Day," the affection and tenderness shine through in the way they can only at a true family celebration. --David Sprague

Artist: José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, James Levine, Zubin Mehta

Back in 1990, three of the world's most celebrated tenors, namely José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotii, combined forces to create the Three Tenors, now celebrated on a "best of" CD. They gave their first concert in Rome; that event was recorded and went on to become one of the best-selling classical titles of all time.

This latest release brings together tracks from that night in Rome (including "Nessun dorma" and a competitive rendition of "O sole mio") with music performed in a 1994 concert in Los Angeles as well as at the 1998 event in Paris where the Three Tenors sang to an audience of thousands with the Eiffel Tower as their spectacular backdrop.

The 22 tracks which comprise The Best of the Three Tenors range from operatic standards, such as the joyful "Brindisi" from La traviata to popular songs including "Singin' in the rain" via songs from the shows ("You'll Never Walk Alone" from Carousel). There are no solos on this disc--each piece is performed by all three singers. And with plenty of applause and cheering to be heard, not to mention the sense of fun in the singers' voices, the disc truly captures the atmosphere of these extra...
Average rating of 5/5 The Best of the Three Tenors, 2003-12-08
I am not really a classical music buff, but with my father in law being one its an obvious choice for presents. knowing that he likes the 3 tenors is a big help seeing as i do not really know much at all about classical music apart form the odd few bits world cup and films. I bought this disc for his birthday not really relishing the thought of hearing it, however I was pleasently supprised indeed. This was very easy on the ears indeed and shock horror on the whole i enjoyed cd there was the odd one i was not that overly keen on not to sure which one it was called i think it was track 4 Sous le ciel de Paris. By comparrison you'll never walk alone i thought was very enjoyable along with nessumdora the world cup anthum from a few years back now. Untill listening to this cd i thought this to be a bit highbrow and deffinatelly not my cup off tea at all even for my (heinz 57) taste trance, rock, reggea, tamla garage etc my 19 month old daughter was bopping along to it even my wife thought it was good. What was more worrying still i purchased a copy myself to add to my collection looks a bit odd being just below deaf leppard. If you are into classical music or not this is well worth adding to your collection and hey you might find you like it and play it a lot more than you thought you would, I certainly did! if you do not its a good present for someone who does. The cover looks good to

When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favourite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli--who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself--returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias, the release of which coincides with the first major English-language biography of the singer. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalise Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of colour and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a programme of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesend...

Average rating of 5/5 Truly excellent, 2007-04-02
This CD is absolutely brilliant. I originally bought it because I heard the track 'Home Away From Home' on Classic FM and wanted to come down the aisle to it, but I quickly fell in love with the whole CD, and so did my fiance. The last four tracks are my favourites but as the tracks tell their tale, they are alternately sad, thoughtful, lively and uplifting. It has some fantastic music on it - if you love Irish music and particularly the flute, viola and piano, this is the CD for you. I have since bought this CD for my mum, who also loves it, and have bought the sheet music so some friends can play it in piano and flute duet at our wedding.

Artist: Bert Jansch

Average rating of 3/5 Misguided rarity, saved by the bonus tracks, 2009-06-25
After waiting nearly 35 years we finally have the second much anticipated major release by Bert Jansch from the 1970s, Santa Barabra Honeymoon - the first being the magnificent L A Turnaround.

L A Turnaround re-introduced Bert Jansch as a solo artist after the split of Folk Supergroup 'Pentangle' in the 1970s. Quite rightly it elevated him to the top of his field as one of the most venerated folk artists of his generation. It also confirmed him as a superlative guitarist and gifted song-writer and interpreter of English folk songs.

By contrast, I believe that Santa Barbara Honeymoon may have been complicit in starting Jansch on the slide to near obscurity in the 80s and 90s from which he has only recently been rescued.

By any objective measure, this is an appalling record. It should be required listening on any course about musical production as an example of 'how not to'. I actually wonder if Mr Jansch could even successfully pursue a claim against the producer Danny Lane for the detriment to his standing as a musician.

What do I object to? Well imagine if Simon Cowell was allowed to produce a serious musical project and this is what you would get. A 'new orleans' style jazz band, a gospel chorus and (I kid you not) 'Boney-M-style' steel drums as backing for Bert Jansch. The least objectionable production is when Lane thinks a bit of rock is called for. Now, I am all for musical experimentation but when it comes at the price of seriously destroying the fine musicianship and subtle songwriting of the performer then something is seriously wrong.

And here is the pity. Clearly, Jansch was inspired by the success of L A Turnaround to continue to write cogent, stimulating songs but I'm sorry to say that, for example, the wonderful imagery and moving message of 'Lost and Gone' is completely overpowered by the over-the-top backing singers, or 'Build Another Band' by the appalling and unecessary use of steel drums.

Is it all bad? Well there are some flashes of normality, especially on the production of the Jackson C Frank homage 'Blues Run The Game', which alone makes the album worth buying (although I think it is available on a previous compilation album).

In support of my case that Danny Lane should hang his head in shame, I suggest a close listening of the 'bonus track' where a far more realistic and genuinely musical construction of 'Build Another Band', which is an alternate version, reveals what a great song it is.

For Bert Jansch collectors, of course you will want to own this album, even if you do grimace through most of its content. I even suggest that after listening to it once, you'll probably never listen to it again (or like me only transfer 'Blues Run The Game' to your MP3 player). For others, please do not start here. Please either get 'L A Turnaround' or if you can find it 'Heartbreak', or prepare to be disappointed.

Average rating of 5/5 go out + buy chapter 1 by the Backstreet Boys, best cd out!, 2001-11-01
I dont know how i can make you buy this album, all i can say is that it is absolutely amazin. It has all their released singles on it. Its very diverse, somewhat unusual for a pop band but bsb are bigger and better then the stereo type. On this hot album are slow love songs way back from 1996 like i'll never break your heart- my favourite of their songs. Since then 'Quit playing games' a massive world known single, 'I want it that way', no 1 in England, 'All i have to give', and 'As long as you love me'. Their latest ballads include, 'Shape of my heart which is of unique style and the more r&b, latino style of 'More than that' another one of my favourites. Their latest single is an added bonus called 'Drowning'. Their more up tempo songs include 'Everyone' which is a great holloween single.'Larger than life' , 'The one' written by Brian a member of the band. They are a talented group and this cd does them justice. You would be missing out to not get it!

Average rating of 5/5 The Voice, 2009-01-29
It's such a shame that Mario Lanza did not believe his voice was the greatest the 20th century had known. He reaches all the notes with ease, he has passion, tenderness and clarity. For me he is the greatest tenor bar none. No-one comes close. He makes me cry.

Artist: Enya

Enya seventh studio album, And Winter Came can be enjoyed in two ways. With songs like “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, “Journey Of The Angels”, the children’s song “Toy Soldier” and a Gaelic version of “Silent Night”, (“Oiche Chiuin”) it is, at least half of the time, a celebration of Christmas, flush with joyful, traditional festive cheer (and those haunting, floating vocals). But other songs here are less overtly religious. The ambient title track, the ethereal “Last Time By Moonlight” and the chugging, rhythmic “Trains And Winter Rains”, although equally emotive, conjure up slightly different imagery--namely, landscapes of ice-covered forests and star-strewn nightscapes. Of course all the songs somehow together to create a coherent winter tapestry that’s broken only by the surprisingly poppy "My! My! Time Flies!”--an upbeat number that features, believe it or not, some adroit blues guitar. Perhaps on Enya’s next album we’ll see more of her pop side let loose; but for now this is as “adult contemporary” as it gets. --Danny McKenna
Average rating of 5/5 Enya just gets better and better ....., 2009-06-21
This CD finally drew me into accepting that I am an Enya fan! It is lavishly beautiful, uplifting, engrossing, pitch-perfect and a sheer joy! Even those who believe that they can only really love classical music should try this. Bach purists may turn away because of its technical production but they are missing the point. Music is about creation and this is a wonderful modern way forward with some ageless beauty in sound.

I already have other CDs of Enya but feel that this is the best and unexpectedly brilliant considering all the creations she has produced over the past few years. I play it out-of-season at bedtime as a treat for the soul before going to sleep!
