Average rating of 5/5 Surprisingly strong, 2009-10-15
I had sung some John Rutter songs in the choir, and liked them alot.
But his requiem is altogether far more, a surprisingly strong work, with a lovely orchestral accompaniment.

Average rating of 5/5 Beautiful and Enchanting, 2006-03-29
This is a lovely double CD set. Mendelssohn solo piano music is beautiful and very escapist. Although I am a classical buff myself, I am buying a second copy to give to my fashionable electric guitar playing mate who wants to get into classical but doesn't know what he'd like. I reckon this stuff is hard to dislike and very accessible to classical newbes. I also have no complaints about Barenboim's performance/interpretation of these works.

Artist: Russell Watson

On Reprise, his third album, Russell Watson continues to bring together classical pieces with light songs--have Bizet and "Bohemian Rhapsody" ever shared a disc before? Probably not, and with good reason--it's rather unsettling to hear Leoncavallo's devestating "Vesti la giubba" (from Pagliacci) tagged on after a dreary rendition of the aforementioned Queen hit.

He may have been dubbed "the people's tenor", but Watson is at his best--and most comfortable--at the lighter end of the repertory. He sings the lilting "That's Amore" with charm and humour, a smooth performance which compares to Robbie Williams on Swing When You're Winning.

Nicholas Dodd's swooning orchestrations give Reprise a grandiose feel. Sadly, Watson's voice cannot match their intensity; his version of the famous duet from The Pearl Fishers (yes, he sings both parts) sounds strangled and his performance of "Core 'ngrato" is distinctly unmemorable.

Watson is credited as Reprise's producer. If he maintains that role on album number four, he should concentrate on the light songs and ballads, which he performs so well, in this instance not just "That's Amore" but also "...
Average rating of 5/5 Russell Watson, 3rd Album (Reprise), 2008-08-15

This is an Australian import version, with unspecified bonus track, of Russell Watson's Reprise album released in 2002. Reprise I think represents a more confident and self assured singer than on his previous `The Voice' and `Encore'albums, thanks to his increasingly successful concert touring and life in the limelight.

But it was also a worrying time during which he suffered a throat polyp, threatening to end his singing career, which was thankfully removed without causing long term problems to his voice.

The songs are a mix of classical, opera and popular, with a distinctly more dramatic feel to those opera choices, the best example being the version of `Granada' which takes on epic proportions with the orchestral score and an individual vocal interpretation which, while straying from the conventional, certainly works.

Notable also are Ave Maria (Schubert's version) and a lovely performance of `The Pearl Fisher's duet (oddly no mention of who the duet was with, I suspect both voices are Russell Watson's!)

Bohemian Rhapsody is a bold choice let down by lame electronic backing, which is a shame for it represents one of Russell's best recorded examples of his talent for singing rock music. Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash offered Watson the job of Velvet Revolver frontman, which he declined, but I'm sure he could handle `Sweet Child o' Mine'.

In fact, on the strength of this album's wide ranging style of music, he can probably make a good job of almost everything.

The actress Prunella Scales is the narrator on this Naxos release which is unashamedly aimed at the children's Christmas market. Two seasonal works fill 64 minutes--Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Rimsky-Korsakov's Christmas Eve Suite. Scales is rather a plummy mother. Her elegant diction comes from a bygone dinner-party era. She sounds kind and warm but also somewhat distant as if she were the sort to employ a third party actually to bring the children up. One imagines her obedient junior audience demurely sitting in rows, not making a sound, restraining themselves even as the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" twinkles magically from the speakers. Children may find this lap-forbidding. Nikolai Gogol wrote the story for Rimsky-Korsakov's opera Christmas Eve. A blacksmith fools the devil, obtains a pair of the Empress' slippers and wins the initially reluctant hand of the prettiest girl in town. Rimsky-Korsakov's music is more incidental to, and dependant on, the story than Tchaikovsky's, which may be performed without. Michael Halasz conducts the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in the Tchaikovsky, Igor Golovschin the Moscow Symphony Orchestra in the Rimsky-Korsa...
Average rating of 4/5 A civilising experience, 2002-08-02
It's true that the narration style of Prunella Scales is cool and restrained, but that is entirely in keeping with the tone of her script. The music sparkles, and The Nutcracker is full of memorable tunes that children warm to. Can it hold up against all the competition for kids' attention at Christmas? I think it probably can.
