Neil Diamond
Neil Diamond has always fancied himself a man of many styles, which probably helps explain why he tries to flaunt each and every one of them on this diverse, sometimes dizzying Christmas disc. He plays it relatively straight on "Silent Night" and "The Christmas Song," but really lets loose on a version of "White Christmas" that recalls the doo-wop of his teen years in the 1950s. Diamond even expands his palette to include a choir-accompanied take on John Lennon's pacifist classic "Happy Christmas (War is Over)." It's the kind of intermingling that makes his fans go wild, but casual admirers should watch out for those stylistic U-turns. --David Sprague
Exactly what you'd expect from Neil, 2009-09-09 Whatever you think of Neil Diamond, you can't deny his popularity. Critics sometimes used to say that he was predictable, before he teamed up with Rick Rubin a few years ago. Then again, most singers are predictable, not least because the music business doesn't like versatility, which makes life difficult for their marketing departments. So it is that you either like a singer's style, or you don't. Neil offers no real surprises here, the style being exactly what you'd expect pre-Rick Rubin, from the opening medley (O come o come Emmanuel / We three kings) to the closing O holy night. Most of the songs in between are well-loved classics that appear on many Christmas albums. Regardless of whether Neil is predictable or not, there are plenty of people out there who love his music for what it is and I'm one of them.
Neil wrote one song (You make it feel like Christmas) and he also included John Lennon's classic (Happy Xmas war is over) as well as a traditional non-Christmas hymn (Morning has broken), all of them sounding brilliant. Elsewhere, Neil and his arrangers have added a distinctive touch here and there, but never stray far from the standard arrangement. I'm pleased to report that Neil includes the rarely recorded first verse of White Christmas setting the scene in Beverley Hills.
If you enjoy Neil's music, you'll love this album and the sequel (Christmas album volume 2), which follows the same formula, with plenty of famous classics and the occasional less obvious selection.

Barbra Streisand
She is a class of her own - no other singer and entertainer has earned so many awards as BARBRA STREISAND !!, 2009-11-04
I'm a German engineer and businessman who listended to Barbra Streisand when I studied in the U.S. in the 1980ies. Her singing has always been wonderful, and she got standing ovations from the audiences.
I lived and studied in Boston, Massachusetts and in Palo Alto, California, and I bought hundreds of LPs and CDs from various artists, but Barbra Streisand has always been my all-time favorite singer. I moved from job to job all over the world in the following 25 years after my graduation. I lived and worked in North and South America, in Australia, all over Europe. I live now inmid the desert of the Emirate Abu Dhabi. I still have all the LPs and CDs I bought in the last 30 years. BARBRA STREISAND has always been one of my all-time favorites, and I enjoy it to listen to her on my drives from Abu Dhabi City into the desert to LIWA Oasis, or to Dubai, to Al Ain, to Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, ....
Some reviewers complain that Barbra's voice has become "older", "deeper" - to my personal impression her voice has become warmer and more mature.
About Barbra Streisand's success
It's time to rack up the points on this one because Barbra has done it all. Want proof? How about this for starters: 43 gold albums, 27 platinum albums, 13 multi-platinum albums, 5 gold videos, etc. And this is only her musical career.
She has also broken barriers in the film industry as an actress, director and producer. In 1976, she won six Golden Globes as a producer for A Star is Born and in 1983, she received five Academy Award nominations and took home a couple more Golden Globes for her directorial debut in Yentl.
A whopping total of ten Golden Globe awards received throughout her career are the most achieved by any entertainment artist. Her second effort in the director's chair for The Prince of Tides earned Barbra seven Academy Award nominations along with a coveted nomination from the Director's Guild of America. In January 2000, she was crowned with the Golden Globe's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. It's safe to assume that Miss Streisand is a go-getter, to say the least. Way to go Barb.
Barbra Streisand has become a timeless classic
Nowadays, Barbra has been keeping busy, alongside her actor/director husband James Brolin (her first marriage was to actor Elliott Gould), with ongoing charity events and special appearances. Her latest musical effort, Christmas Memories, recently hit store shelves just in time for the 2001 holiday season.
She has also announced that she's giving up concert performances for good, in order to have more time to herself, but we're not sure when that "final" performance will be, to the delight of her millions of fans.

Natalie Cole,
The London Symphony Orchestra
She's always been--and probably always will--be more famous for being Nat "King" Cole's daughter than she will be for any of her own accomplishments. So it's almost unfair that, despite her own tender voice and nuances, Natalie Cole's biggest hit came on a technology-aided duet between her and her dead father--and we should be outraged that she reprises the trick on this collection of Christmas standards. "The Christmas Song", the one duet here, is a nice tune, and the rest of the album--which features the London Symphony Orchestra--is a pleasure. Cole remains faithfull to the traditional tunes here until the end, where she (thankfully) gets playful with "Twelve Days of Christmas". --Lee Mazzilli
A nice Christmas album., 2008-10-06 This is a great CD with some really nice vocals by Natalie. I won't comment on the first track as I have no particular criticism of it except to say that perhaps this is Natalie's own tribute to her father as it was "his" song and should perhaps always remain so.
The other tracks on this CD are lovely and Natalie turns in some really terrific vocals. The London Symphony Orchestra add a richness and depth to the whole recording. I have to be honest and say that I only like albums where artists are accompanied by a wonderful lush orchestra with great orchestral arrangements.
I don't usually highlight any particular tracks on an album in my reviews as it could be taken that the rest of the tracks are substandard but in this case I just cannot help myself by drawing your attention to Natalie's version of "Carol Of The Bells." Her performance of this Eastern European carol is truly outstanding and the orchestral arrangement is absolutely mind blowing. Probably the best performance by a singer and orchestra of my favourite Christmas carol that I have ever heard .It's jazzy, bluesy and classical all rolled into one great stunning rendition with superb orchestral playing by the best "sound machine" in the business, the London Symphony Orchestra.
The album is great value for money and very easy on the ear - a great happy sounding album for the holiday season. Thanks for stopping by and reading - happy holidays and happy listening!

MAYBE THE BEST TENOR OF 2OTH. CENTURY, 2010-05-29 Mario Lanza: The Ultimate Collection
This recording is truly great, showing of the great Lanza's remarkable command of the operatic and more modern genre of singing.
Poor Mario, he was exploited badly by the Holywood star mincing machine and never really believed that he had the luck to have this wonderful voice and a truly marvellous voice it was.
I was about eleven years old, I think (I am now sixty-six) when I first heard him on the radio and remember being totally and wholly fascinated that such a voice could issue from a human throat. He was compared to the great Caruso and his voice was, in fact, mistakenly thought to be Caruso's on more than one occasion.
He chose (or more likely was coerced) to go into films rather than onto the operatic stage and, who knows, if he had taken the other course, he may have lived longer and would have been able to leave us more of his wonderful gift? I do believe that, because Mario was of a naturally robust build, which incidentally made for his better singing, the pressure of Holywood forcing him to diet to look slimmer for his films, caused a lot of his health problems. He actually died from a pulmonary embolism at the very young age of thirty-seven, which could have resulted from his constant dieting having a dilatory effect on his circulation.
I remember when I heard that he had died ( I was fifteen) I felt quite devastated and found it hardly believable. What a tragedy and an unnecessary waste.
The Three Tenors, Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras have all said that he was their idol when they first came into the operatic world; for these three greats to say this, says a great deal about Mario's heart-breaking voice, doesn't it?
Buy this recording and his others as they are all wonderful and in a lot of cases heart-rending with the sweetness of his articulation and delivery. In my opinion they have never been bettered even by Pavarotti and that's saying a lot in my book.

Mostly the classics, 2005-01-26 For the most part, this album features classic songs, sung in the traditional manner by Barbra. Barbra really didn't need to do any more, given her wonderful voice, but she does have a few surprises in store. The opening Jingle bells is not done in the traditional way as Barbra gallops through most of it at breakneck speed. I appreciate Barbra's attempt to do something different but I prefer the standard arrangement. After that brisk opening, the album slows down and never again rises above mid-tempo as the remainder of the album is dominated by ballads.Barbra may have been the first singer to include My favorite things (the Julie Andrews classic from the Sound of music) in a Christmas album. Nobody is surprised any more that this song sometimes gets included in Christmas albums. The only original song is The best gift (about a baby). Barbra sings it beautifully. Of Barbra's two Christmas albums, I prefer the other one to this, mainly because the songs are more interesting to me, but I know that a lot of Barbra's fans prefer this one, which was recorded when her voice was at its finest - however, Barbra was still in good voice on the other album. If you love Barbra's music and you enjoy Christmas music, you will want both of her Christmas albums, but if you only want to buy one of them, you have a hard choice to make.

disappointment, 2008-01-07 Purchased as a gift for a dedicated RC friend. She was reluctant to pass comment as it was a gift but felt she should say that this DVD was nothing like the review - hard to follow and the clips difficult to understand. I viewed this as well and was upset that I had thought it would be of great interest to her. The continuity was hard to follow and the filming very poor
