Artist: Anne Sofie Von Otter

Just listing the composers featured on The Art of Anne Sofie von Otter here would take up the allotted space. Suffice to say that from Handel, Mozart and Bach through to Berlioz, Korngold and Elvis Costello, this ravishing compilation sums up what we have long known--that von Otter effortlessly embraces so many styles of music with consummate artistry, character and technique. What more can you say? She is as at home with early music ensembles such as The English Concert and Les Musiciens du Louvre as with the Berlin Philharmonic in Mahler or Offenbach with the Dresden State Orchestra.

Churlish reservations relate only to the overall choice of repertoire--perhaps at the expense of a little less Mozart and Handel, still more space devoted to an uninterrupted sequence of songs with piano would be welcomed, an area where many find von Otter's gifts at their most compelling. The magical 1996 Swedish song album isn't represented at all, but then again a quick flip through the von Otter discography leaves one wishing so much else was included here. That would be totally impractical, of course, after all, who could buy this and not want then to explore her discography in detail?...
Average rating of 5/5 Splendid introduction, 2002-10-31
As Amazon's own reviwer says in praise (or warning?), this is an excellent introduction to Otter's work, and likely to cause your credit card to burn a hole in your wallet as you order more and more of her discs. An incredible vocal genius is at work here. For those who are wary of classical music for voice (operaphobia, perhaps) this is proof that there is much intoxicating music to be discovered. And for those who already love Ms Otter's work, her intriguing album with twisted pop philosopher Elvis Costello might begin them on a new road into intelligent pop music.

Average rating of 5/5 Christmas with Andre Rieu, 2010-01-20
I must admit that I hadn't heard of Andre Rieu until I saw him on the Royal Performance on tv and straight away bought his latest disc and dvd. I have since purchased a few more including Christmas with Andre Rieu where he tells the story of his chilhood christmasses and thoroughly enjoyed it. When I listen to his cd's I can almost see his face and how he enjoys his music. Looking forward to buying more

Artist: Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

Now what could be more festive than Christmas songs, horns, and a Latin-infused rhythm section? Not much, which is why Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass's Christmas Album is perfect for that kitschy cocktail party or for trimming the tree. As background music, this collection is perfect. Paying too close attention to it, however, is not advised. For instance, the vocals on "Christmas Song" would have sounded so much better had they been replaced by the timbre of Herb's trumpet. But that mistake aside, the staccato stylings of the Brass's arrangement adds a south-of-the-border flair to "Winter Wonderland" and turns "Jingle Bells" into a hyper-salsa. "Las Mañanitas" and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desirings" glow with a warm sentimental touch. As always, the interplay of the horns via melody lines and harmonies is first rate. --Steve Gdula
Average rating of 5/5 Re-issue of 1968 classic, 2009-09-08
I like hearing brass band music occasionally as it provides a refreshing change to what I normally listen to. I've heard several other brass band Christmas albums and none of them are like this one by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

On page 5 of the 20-page booklet that accompanies this re-issue, somebody comments that a good Christmas album had better contain Little drummer boy or Silent night. Well, this album contains neither (and there are plenty of other great Christmas albums that also contain neither), but it does contain distinctive recordings of Winter wonderland, Jingle bells, My favorite things, Sleigh ride and Jingle bell rock, all performed superbly in a mainly instrumental style, sometimes accompanied by humming noises.

There are two genuine vocal tracks on which Herb sings. One is The Christmas song (but the liner notes claim that Herb prefers listening to Nat King Cole's version. The other song, which suits Herb much better, is The bell that couldn't jingle. Bobby Helms apparently recorded it first, but I haven't heard his version (yet) and I don't remember hearing the song elsewhere. Nevertheless, I think Herb is better as an instrumentalist than as a vocalist. In that role, he is outstanding. It's also worth noting that he was the co-founder of A and M records and that he was responsible for signing the hitherto-obscure Carpenters to that label.

If you're looking for a Christmas album that sounds different most yet contains plenty of familiar tunes, this might suit you.

Artist: Bing Crosby

Average rating of 5/5 Great introduction to Bing's music, 2005-03-09
Born Harry Crosby but nicknamed Bing after a newspaper cartoon character that he enjoyed as a child, he had well over three hundred hits on the American charts. His British chart history is modest (twelve different hits) but his most prolific years were already past by the time British sales charts began.

The tracks on this compilation generally date from the thirties and forties and include duets with the Andrews sisters, Bob Hope, Al Johnson, Louis Armstrong and (via overdubbing) David Bowie. You could fill several CD's just with Bing's duets and there are other compilations that explore these in greater detail.

The songs selected were not always American hits for Bing - and even where they were, his version wasn't always the biggest hit - but they are all classic songs of their age. Of course, some of Bing's big American hits are here including Don't fence me in (with the Andrews sisters), White Christmas, Pennies from heaven, Moonlight becomes you, Swinging on a star and Now is the hour, all of which made number one in America, and Dear hearts and gentle people, which spent a month as American number two. White Christmas is one of three Christmas songs are included - the others are Peace on earth (with David Bowie) and Silent night.

Among the other songs are Bing's covers of three of Fred Astaire's greatest American hits (Cheek to cheek, They all laughed, Nice work if you can get it) as well as Bing's covers of such classic songs as Among my souvenirs (a song from 1928 that became a hit all over again when Connie Francis covered it in 1959), You are my sunshine, Spanish eyes, A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square, As time goes by and Stardust.

While this is by no means a greatest hits collection, it provides an excellent selection of Bing's music.

Average rating of 5/5 Mario Lanza - Because and others, 2009-11-14
This is a super and very comprehensive collection of Mario Lanza's best songs - all the favourites seem to be here along with some good information on the sleeve. If you enjoy Lanza, you will enjoy this superb recording.

On the down side, the song list was not detailed on the web site advertisement, which is a great error - so as I particularly wanted "Because" I took a chance ordering it and hoped it would be one of the songs, and it was. With over 20 tracks, all his most memorable songs are there, inc Ave Maria and Be My Love etc

Artist: Enya

Enya seventh studio album, And Winter Came can be enjoyed in two ways. With songs like “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, “Journey Of The Angels”, the children’s song “Toy Soldier” and a Gaelic version of “Silent Night”, (“Oiche Chiuin”) it is, at least half of the time, a celebration of Christmas, flush with joyful, traditional festive cheer (and those haunting, floating vocals). But other songs here are less overtly religious. The ambient title track, the ethereal “Last Time By Moonlight” and the chugging, rhythmic “Trains And Winter Rains”, although equally emotive, conjure up slightly different imagery--namely, landscapes of ice-covered forests and star-strewn nightscapes. Of course all the songs somehow together to create a coherent winter tapestry that’s broken only by the surprisingly poppy "My! My! Time Flies!”--an upbeat number that features, believe it or not, some adroit blues guitar. Perhaps on Enya’s next album we’ll see more of her pop side let loose; but for now this is as “adult contemporary” as it gets. --Danny McKenna
Average rating of 5/5 Another beauty!, 2010-01-09
Having listened to this album for a year, even during the summer months, and then reading the reviews by others, I found myself agreeing, particularly, with two of my fellow reviewers. As Lee Kaay said, "other reviewers have missed the point." Remember, "this is Enya, not different Enya". If you REALLY like Enya, why would you want something different? Me, I don't want anything different, I want her, in all of her glory - and this is a glorious album. In fact, this album is probably second only to Watermark, if not THE best.

Then, there is Julia Gemstone. I am not a stressed parent (my two lads have flown the nest), but I agree entirely with her when she says she loves Enya and find her music soothing. I find great peacefulness in her music. Strangely, I am not a fan of Christmas, but do like Christmas music; but I think this album, as the title states, goes beyond Christmas and goes into the whole winter season.

I find the whole album has great warmth and a variety of textures. It also feels like an album accessible to all - the children would like "One Toy Soldier", those who like a bit of tempo in their music have "My! My! Time Flies!" and "Trains and Winter Rains" to listen to, whilst those who want a hymnal slant can have the beauty that is "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" and the fantastic new, Chorale version of "Oiche Chiuin" (Silent Night in gaelic). For us romantics, I think the highlights of this album, and tracks I just can not stop playing are "Dreams Are More Precious" and "Last Time By Moonlight" - in my opinion, the two best tracks I have ever heard from Enya. The first has such beauty in the lyrics and are wonderfully sung as a single voice; the second, as with other tracks on this album, has a whole choir of Enya and is just the most magically romantic song - I get goosebumps listening to it.

Yes, I know it's all subjective and it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I find this to be a beautifully produced album, with stunning music, singing and instrumentation. The CD booklet is even a masterpiece, in snow white, with great pictures of our heroine and containing Roma Ryan's lyrics.

For me, this is sheer bliss - New Age music at its very best. Thank you, Enya. Some may have doubted whether you, Roma and Nicky Ryan, still had the ability to come up with another great album, but you've done so here with something bordering on superlative. What I want now is a DVD of all the tracks....or is that one request too far?
