Artist:
Mariah Carey
She's been hailed for her multi-octave vocal range--a tool that sometimes detracts from her pop recordings, but actually works quite beautifully in the context of this charming holiday collection. Fans will surely approve of Carey's renditions of slinky secular songs like "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)" and a nicely subdued "All I Want for Christmas Is You". But where she really surprises is in her unadorned delivery of traditional carols, highlighted by "Silent Night" (which she sings quietly, avoiding the temptation to wail those high notes) and "Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child". Merry Christmas is a must for die-hards and a pleasant surprise for the unconverted. --David Sprague
Nice mix of original and traditional songs, 2009-09-08 With three original songs, one of which became an international hit for Mariah, together with a cover of a Phil Spector classic, one cover of a very obscure traditional song (Jesus oh what a wonderful child), which I don't remember hearing before, and six tracks featuring covers of famous traditional songs, this album has something for everybody.
Mariah proves here that she can sing upbeat sons such as her big hit (All I want for Christmas is you) and her cover of the Phil Spector classic first recorded by Darlene Love (Christmas (baby please come home)), but she is equally capable with the slower songs such as her other two originals (Miss you most at Christmas time, Jesus born on this day).
Of the six tracks that are devoted to famous traditional songs, one is a two-song medley (Hark the heral angels sing, Gloria in Excelcis Deo) which, together with the other five (Silent night, O holy night, Joy to the world, Santa Claus is coming to town, God rest ye merry gentlemen) offer enough familiarity to make this a good album to play as background music. Mariah sounds good on these songs although among them, I think she sounds best on the medley and Santa Claus is coming to town. Personally, I like to hear her on the obscure stuff best, but it takes a brave singer to avoid the standards altogether when recording a Christmas album.
This is an excellent Christmas album that will give pleasure to many people, not just those who are fans of Mariah's other music.

What a (Christmas) turkey, 2009-12-09 Anyone buying this in the hope that it will give them a warm Christmassy glow (as I did)to set them up for the festive season will be sorely disappointed. The title itself is misleading as you only see Bing Crosby once. There is a great line up of stars, but it looks and feels like they each filmed their own piece, which were then edited (badly) together. The result is, quite frankly, a boring succession of "turns" with nothing linking them together. It is about as festive as the turkey frame the day after Boxing Day.

LOVE IT!, 2010-04-08 I didn't know what to expect when ordering this DVD. I wanted my son to get to know the old sesame street characters that i always loved and thought it would be fun with music as a background. This is a wonderful dvd with a little story built around old music clips from throughout the years. I am embarassed to say that the finale with everyone singing "sing" (the la la song) brings me to tears everytime :) Oh and my son LOVES IT too! lol
