Artist: Destiny's Child

I'd never want to visit Destiny's Child's homes for the holidays, if their nonsensically named holiday album 8 Days of Christmas is any indication of what they've got under the tree. Chilly, forced and overdone, this mixed bag of modern classics, tarted-up traditional carols and a trio of tunes penned by Beyoncé Knowles doesn't conjure up a single warm-and-fuzzy image of chestnuts roasting on an open fire or Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Rather, it's just another forum to showcase the band's Gucci bag of vocal gymnastics and crass materialism. The Texas trio takes seasonal classics such as Irving Berlin's "White Christmas", "Silent Night" and "Little Drummer Boy" and embellishes them with its own trills and off-kilter harmonies, overwhelming the songs so that their simple beauty is totally obscured. "On the eighth day of Christmas, my baby gave to me, a pair of Chloe shades and a diamond belly ring," brags Knowles in the title song--which is a take-off on the "12 Days of Christmas"--without ever explaining why they loped off four days. In addition, the band are shamelessly self-indulgent throughout the dozen songs found here, taking untold liberties, such as renaming the...
Average rating of 5/5 Not typical of what I listen to but interesting, 2009-09-09
I like many different types of music including pop, rock, country, jazz, folk, classical and R+B. When it comes to R+B, I am mainly interested in the old stuff, particularly of the fifties, sixties and seventies. This album dates from the late nineties and is, of course, recorded in a much more recent style of R+B. With its distinctive funky rhythms much more to the fore than on most Christmas albums, it is certainly different for any of the music that I normally listen to.

The song titles are certainly familiar but have you heard them interpreted anything like this before? 8 days of Christmas (the title track) is a re-working of 12 days of Christmas. I'm guessing that they cut it from 12 to 8 because a full-length version would have been too long given the way that they do it. Opera of the bells is actually their reworking of Carol of the bells. I can't even guess the reason for the title change here, since it certainly doesn't sound very operatic to my ears. My favorite here is probably Silent night, precisely because I've heard so many versions of this well-worn chestnut. I appreciate hearing this very different, but still recognizable, version.

As a change from what I normally listen to, this is great. Nevertheless, it won't cause me to get excited about contemporary R+B on a large scale. Still, I may dabble in it occasionally as I did with this. If you are one of those people who buy music based on what I like, I strongly recommend that you hear samples before committing yourself.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir sets the tone for what Christmas albums should sound like, and Joy to the World upholds their exacting standard of excellence. Rereleased from two concerts recorded in 1970 and 1977 and repacked with three bonus tracks, this collection is as perfect as it gets, thanks to pristine production, gorgeous vocal arrangements, and stately accompaniment by the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. This record will set the mood for revelling, both with more contemporary carols such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", and "The Christmas Song" and sacred numbers such as Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" and "O Holy Night". Joy to the World qualifies as a truly essential yuletide album. --Jaan Uhelszki
Average rating of 5/5 Christmas Carols, 2010-02-02
Not having many CDs of carols I found I was missing them this year.
I have loads of tape and 33's but these need constant attention as they only last half an hour. The shops seem to have tacky versions mainly, and I found this CD to be the purfect antidote as it is all full blooded 'CHOIR' sung carols as they should be as of olden times. (When I was a kid)
Good as background music if wanted, but I found myself joining in with many of them throughout the CD.
A good strong traditional carol CD well worth the cost. Happy next Christmas.

Average rating of 5/5 Great Family Film!, 2009-12-04
This is aimed at younger children 2-7yr olds. Older kids might not be too impressed by this but if you want a sweet Christmas story to share with your kids this is it! It is the story with a moral message about accepting others who are different like a deer with a red nose and an elf that doesn't want to make toys for Santa but wants to be a dentist. The abominable Snow man can be a bit scary but he's soon tamed.
Highly recommend this stop animation film to any child or anyone young at heart!

Average rating of 5/5 Christmas Music - The Sixteen - Harry Christophers Director, 2005-12-15
This is now the 11th Christmas that this music has been part of the tradition of my holiday season, and although I've acquired numerous other holiday music collections over the years, this far surpasses any other collection that I own. It is difficult to do justice to this music by describing it in mere words. The collection ranges from the 14th to the 16th Century, and is unlike any other collection of Christmas music available. It evokes the true spirit of the Christmas season, is enlightening, inspirational, and transports the listener far from the trite elements of the 'modern' holiday season. No other choral group can compare to the Harry Christophers The Sixteen (named such as the group consists of four treble/mean, four alto, four tenor and four bass choralists). A truly unique auditory experience, and absolutely worth every penny.

Average rating of 5/5 A Wonderful Introduction to the Art of Kiri Te Kanawa, 2010-03-05
This is a terrific collection of arias and songs by a singer with one of the most beautiful voices of our time. There are Italian, French and German arias and I really must single out the aria by Korngold which is simply wonderful - I could not stop playing it.

The songs cover a very wide range, from Gershwin, Kern and Berlin to English, Scottish and Irish folk songs, and Maori songs from Kiri's native New Zealand. 150 minutes of some of the best singing you'll hear and all in first class sound quality. Very highly recommended.

The John Rutter Christmas Album brings together most of the composer's Christmas songs and carols as well as several of his festive choral arrangements, including a rousing "Joy to the World" and the energetic "I saw three ships". Most of the 23 tracks have been taken from extant discs on Rutter's Collegium label although two, "Dormi, Jesu" and "Sans Day carol", were recorded especially for this release.

Rutter's first two published compositions, written while he was still a teenager, were Christmas pieces for choir, namely the glorious "Nativity Carol" and the infectious "Shepherd's Pipe Carol". Although very different in character, these two carols (for which Rutter also wrote the test) display the composer's sense of joy and wonder at the Christmas story. More than 30 years later, those sentiments are still there in pieces such as the melting "Dormi, Jesu", commissioned by King's College, Cambridge for the 1999 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.

Under the direction of the composer, the youthful voices of the Cambridge Singers are on sparkling form, as are the City of London Sinfonia and vocal soloists Gerald Finley and Stephen Varcoe. This album deserves to be pla...
