Anyone who has ever sung in a church choir or choral society will enjoy this two-disc compilation of religious choral music. Some 29 tracks of complete short works or excerpts from larger pieces, written over the past 500 years, have been selected from recordings by cathedral, chapel and professional choirs. They range from Tallis's Spem in Alium to Arvo Pärt's De Profundis and Britten's A.M.D.G., and include the Schütz Choir of London singing a chorus from Brahms' German Requiem, Harry Christophers and the Sixteen performing a Poulenc motet, the Taverner Consort, which provides six tracks, and the Bamburg Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (with soprano Christiane Oelze as soloist) singing Bruckner's setting of Psalm 150. Much of this music is more familiar today in the concert hall than in a liturgical setting, and whether some of the composers were religious or not, or even believed in God, hardly matters. The sound of combined human voices and the words they had to set inspired them all to produce music that is simultaneously calming and uplifting, allowing them to create music that continues to reach deep into the human psyche. --Richard Fawkes
Average rating of 5/5 Exquisite Music and superb value for money!, 2004-01-22
This 2 CD set of Choral works is very broad ranging, and would suit a concert-goer's taste well. It is as good as actually being there! The scope of work performed is from early Baroque to modern [ Benjamin Britain], and with some works accompanied by Organ, chamber and orchestral backing, as was intended. No disappointment, here-just a perfect evening's entertainment in the full sense. Performed to the highest perfection. Highly recommended both with regard to the performers, and the quality of the recording. [It rather reminds me of New College, Oxford, where I used to attend the Autumn Term 'Choral Season']. The recording times are CD1-75.03mins. and CD2-77.04 respectively, very good value indeed- for perfection!

Average rating of 5/5 Three Masterpieces on One CD, 2005-11-19
This was the first Arvo Part CD I ever bought, and it's still one of the best. Miserere can fairly claim to be one of Part's greatest works: its soundscape is little short of awesome, and occasionally almost terrifying. It is of course also extremely beautiful and serene (especially towards the end).

Festina Lente is one of his best short orchestral pieces, and compares favourably to the most well-known piece of this type, Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten.

Sarah Was Ninety Years Old is a radical reworking of the 1976 piece Modus. I've heard the original (never officially released) and I can happily report that this 1990 reworking is vastly superior. Like Miserere, this is both peaceful and - when the organ comes in at the end - awesome.

All in all, one of the best Arvo CDs out there.

Average rating of 5/5 Please, sir, may I have an entire galaxy of stars for this?, 2007-04-02
Brilliant. Absolutely, stunningly, mind-blowingly brilliant. This was the kick-off concert for the Gardiner Bach cantata pilgrimage of 2000, performed in the Herderkirche, Weimar. I have Gardiner's CD of the Weihnachtsoratorium, which I previously regarded as the best version. Not any more. This knocks spots off it. Soloists (vocal and instrumental), the EBS and of course the marvellous Monteverdis are on top form and the whole thing crackles with excitement. Gardiner clearly has a ball; no routine music-making this, this is passionate with a capital P. He also has a feeling for the dance-like rhythms in much of the piece - just listen to the Monteverdis sizzle through the skittering opening chorale of Cantata 5 and see how long you can stop your feet from tapping. I am in danger of wearing all the pits off this. If you love Bach, you MUST have this.

Average rating of 5/5 Interesting repertoire by a competent line-up, 2004-03-14
Having been a King's Singers fan for decades I was happy, but still kind of disappointed, to welcome another Christmas album from the group; this is their third such issue on CD format. Happily, the repertoire does include "novelties" (if this a suitable word for old music) and the songs are well organised. Moreover, the performances are the best so far - the recording line-up (there have been a change since :-() is, in my opinion, the best one for Early music.

A good Christmas compilation should contain the following things--a selection of old classics to warm your cockles by the fireside, some of the classic pop titles that people always seem to find themselves singing along to in the pub on Christmas Eve, some carols and a handful of oddities to keep everyone on their toes. The Best Christmas Album in the World Ever manages to fulfil all these criteria--on the classic front there is Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Dean Martin's "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow", on the classic pop front there's Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody" and Wizzard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday", traditional carols "Silent Night" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" head the field and as far as oddities go, look no further than the double whammy of "Lonely Pup (In A Christmas Shop)", courtesy of Adam Faith, and "Angels" by Robbie Williams (a pretty tenuous inclusion, especially considering the angel in the title is his mum). All in all, small gripes aside, The Best Christmas Album In The World Ever manages to live up to its name.--Helen Marquis

Average rating of 5/5 Sweeping, seductive, and superlative!, 2006-02-24
Figueras offers the listener a triumphant collection of evocative songs. Let's dispense with a possible concern. This CD is sub-titled "Lullabies". Anyone going to sleep listening to Figueras should see either a hearing or a brain specialist. While they may pacify children, adult listeners will be exhilarated by the sweeping range of her voice and exquisite presentation. Figueras' expressive style simply transcends descriptive praise. From soaring appeals to the heavens to quiet, soothing reassurances, she demonstrates the magnitude of her evocative skills. One can sense constrained passion in each song as she moves from one culture to another through the collection. That one of the pieces was commissioned for this collection is further proof of the extent she provides the listener - she's not confined to neither time nor place.

What is most clearly manifest in this musical anthology is Figueras' professionalism and her Catalan background. Unlike the operatic divas who have deigned to release popular renditions, she demonstrates how someone who truly understands the music of mountain villages or plains communities in any nation can elevate even the most "common" music. The selections range over five centuries or more, reinforcing the impression that nothing exceeds the capacity of her elegant voice to convey feeling to the enraptured listener. Each of us will likely settle on a favourite selection. Predictably, my own is a Catalan piece of an anonymous composer. Perhaps because the lullaby is in her native tongue, the richness of Figueras' rendition evokes intense emotional response. Would that i'd been born a Catalan!

Alia Vox was launched to give fresh impetus to the recordings of Figueras, her husband Jordi Savall and the groups they have created together. This CD will remain a testimony to their efforts to produce the highest quality discs. The sound is excellent, clearly imparting voice and background instruments alike. With 18 selections from a variety of eras and locations, the notes for this CD are extensive. The text of each tune is given in the original and seven other languages. Could scholarship and the universality of music be given finer endorsement? [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
