Three Masterpieces on One CD, 2005-11-19 This was the first Arvo Part CD I ever bought, and it's still one of the best. Miserere can fairly claim to be one of Part's greatest works: its soundscape is little short of awesome, and occasionally almost terrifying. It is of course also extremely beautiful and serene (especially towards the end). Festina Lente is one of his best short orchestral pieces, and compares favourably to the most well-known piece of this type, Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten. Sarah Was Ninety Years Old is a radical reworking of the 1976 piece Modus. I've heard the original (never officially released) and I can happily report that this 1990 reworking is vastly superior. Like Miserere, this is both peaceful and - when the organ comes in at the end - awesome. All in all, one of the best Arvo CDs out there.

Interesting repertoire by a competent line-up, 2004-03-14 Having been a King's Singers fan for decades I was happy, but still kind of disappointed, to welcome another Christmas album from the group; this is their third such issue on CD format. Happily, the repertoire does include "novelties" (if this a suitable word for old music) and the songs are well organised. Moreover, the performances are the best so far - the recording line-up (there have been a change since :-() is, in my opinion, the best one for Early music.

A Wonderful Collection of Christmas Songs, 2002-12-21 Side two of this cd has almost worn out because it's played so many times over the Christmas period. From the classic White Christmas by Bing Crosby to Driving Home For Christmas it's just brilliant from beginning to end. If this cd doesn't get you in the festive spirit, nothing will.

Sweeping, seductive, and superlative!, 2006-02-24 Figueras offers the listener a triumphant collection of evocative songs. Let's dispense with a possible concern. This CD is sub-titled "Lullabies". Anyone going to sleep listening to Figueras should see either a hearing or a brain specialist. While they may pacify children, adult listeners will be exhilarated by the sweeping range of her voice and exquisite presentation. Figueras' expressive style simply transcends descriptive praise. From soaring appeals to the heavens to quiet, soothing reassurances, she demonstrates the magnitude of her evocative skills. One can sense constrained passion in each song as she moves from one culture to another through the collection. That one of the pieces was commissioned for this collection is further proof of the extent she provides the listener - she's not confined to neither time nor place. What is most clearly manifest in this musical anthology is Figueras' professionalism and her Catalan background. Unlike the operatic divas who have deigned to release popular renditions, she demonstrates how someone who truly understands the music of mountain villages or plains communities in any nation can elevate even the most "common" music. The selections range over five centuries or more, reinforcing the impression that nothing exceeds the capacity of her elegant voice to convey feeling to the enraptured listener. Each of us will likely settle on a favourite selection. Predictably, my own is a Catalan piece of an anonymous composer. Perhaps because the lullaby is in her native tongue, the richness of Figueras' rendition evokes intense emotional response. Would that i'd been born a Catalan! Alia Vox was launched to give fresh impetus to the recordings of Figueras, her husband Jordi Savall and the groups they have created together. This CD will remain a testimony to their efforts to produce the highest quality discs. The sound is excellent, clearly imparting voice and background instruments alike. With 18 selections from a variety of eras and locations, the notes for this CD are extensive. The text of each tune is given in the original and seven other languages. Could scholarship and the universality of music be given finer endorsement? [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

A good Christmas compilation should contain the following things--a selection of old classics to warm your cockles by the fireside, some of the classic pop titles that people always seem to find themselves singing along to in the pub on Christmas Eve, some carols and a handful of oddities to keep everyone on their toes. The Best Christmas Album in the World Ever manages to fulfil all these criteria--on the classic front there is Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and Dean Martin's "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow", on the classic pop front there's Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody" and Wizzard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday", traditional carols "Silent Night" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" head the field and as far as oddities go, look no further than the double whammy of "Lonely Pup (In A Christmas Shop)", courtesy of Adam Faith, and "Angels" by Robbie Williams (a pretty tenuous inclusion, especially considering the angel in the title is his mum). All in all, small gripes aside, The Best Christmas Album In The World Ever manages to live up to its name.--Helen Marquis

Fabulous, 2010-09-03 As the two previous reviewers have said, this is fabulous music - performed with verve and sensitivity. You can feel the excitement in the air as Gardiner's "Pilgrimage" - his audacious attempt to perform all Bach's cantatas on the Sunday for which they were written - kicks off.
The cantatas are split between the two discs: three on each. There are also two documentaries (again one on each disc). The first is about the "Bach Pilgrimage" as a project. This is a different documentary from the one on the "Bach Cantatas" DVD. The second shows him speaking to various people in Bach's hometown and beyond about the great man and the world he lived in. I recommend you activate the English subtitles for this if you're not fluent in German as much of the conversation is in that language.
One last thing: i can confirm that the reviewer who said these were discs are in NTSC rather than PAL format is right. People may want to check the manuals for their DVD players to check they can play discs formatted in this way.

Excellent Value&great artists., 2000-12-01 This is the type of album that appealed to me as i have been looking for a christmas album for a long time and this one is the best album that i would choose, as there is a great selection of old and new artists put together on one album that can be played over and over again to remind you of your best christmas ever. Each song can bring back a speciall memory in time and most of the songs on the album are the most popular christmas songs of alltime.

The Ultimate Non-Stop Christmas Album..., 2001-08-31 **Contributor's Advanced Warning: "Jive Bunny's Spectacular Christmas" is a rehash of the 1996 (Music Club) album, "Jive Bunny's Christmas Party". Be warned: The track listings and order they're played are similar on both albums. In many respects, "Spectacular Christmas" and "Christmas Party" are the same album (and the original "Christmas Party" CD is available with two different sleeves)>**Christmas wouldn't be the same without those cheesey Christmas novelty songs. We all admit to hating them any other time of the year, but is there anyone out there who can resist singing along to Slade's, "Merry Christmas Everybody", Roy Wood's, "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" or even Gary Glitter's, "Rock N Roll Christmas" when the party season gets underway? Jive Bunny and the Master Mixers have collected the very best Christmas songs ever released and mixed them into this essential party album. Here you'll find contributions from artists as diverse as The Beach Boys, Elton John, Wham!, Elvis, Mariah Carey, Paul McCartney and a whole host of others (albeit sound-a-likes). Why I enjoy this album so much is that with all the hits intertwined together into an elongated megamix, Jive Bunny seems to breathe new life into old songs. And because it's a megamix, "....Spectacular Christmas" doesn't become boring (as many of the regular Christmas compilations seem to be). If there's ever been a quintessential Christmas album, then this has to be it. My only complaint is with it being described as a party album. It is in many respects, but mellow tracks such like, "White Christmas", "When A Child Is Born", Mary's Boy Child" and "Silent Night" aren't exactly the type of songs you want played at a party! Notwithstanding the more mellow -- but equally good -- tracks on "...Spectacular Christmas", this is one of those 'must-have' albums, and again with it being offered at such a low price, can your CD collection do without it? I think not! Jon.
