Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffe's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for "Gabriel's Oboe" and "The Mission". Not as over-the-top as his well-known spaghetti western scores, The Mission shows Morricone at his dramatic best. --Heidi MacDonald

Breathtaking and beautiful., 2010-09-05
Possibly the most beautiful music score i have ever heard. I cant say i was a great fan of the film itself, it was Jack Blacks comment in Shallow Hal that made me buy the score. It truly is a masterpiece, and an absolute joy to listen to, its no great surprise it comes top, on top 100 lists. I aint a great fan of flutes or pan pipes, but with this score, i didnt even care, the themes and melodies were that beautiful i practically forgot what instrument was playing. An emotional and beautiful piece of work.

Very beautiful music! Morricone never fails when doing a music soundtrack for movies. His music is usually conspicuous and flamboyant, it's very simple almost "child-like" music. His music is so good that it almost steals the show in this movie, like it did in those horrible "spaghetti westerns". The Mission soundtrack would have gone together with the Avatar movie perfectly.

From start to finish The Mission film score is incredibly powerful and moving. The music takes you on a journey from the minute it starts and the fantastic The Falls track never fails to bring a lump to my throat. In my opinion the best soundtrack to any movie ever....
What a beautiful collection of tracks!, 2009-10-05
Some of these tracks make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! These pieces exhibit brilliance and passion. Like other reviewers I am very surprised they did not win an Oscar.
