Prez and Teddy, 2003-04-26 There are many who would argue that this is Lester Young's best album. Prez finds himself in the wonderful company of Papa Joe Jones on drums, Gene Ramey and of course Teddy Wilson. Whenever he found himself in the company of at least one contemporary he would swing to the full and this is an example of him going all out. Lester Young's playing is the best he has been heard in a long time which contrast sharply with the other recording Lester Young and the Jazz Giants done just a day after. Prez's recordings for Verve were all of a high standard except one which I leave the reader to establish.
Press & Teddy, 2008-02-15 This is definitely a must have for anyone keen on Lester Young and an interesting fairly late recording.
I hadn't realised how well Teddy Wilson could play. He's certainly up there with Hank Jones and in my view as good a pianist as any .
Pres and Teddy, Teddy and Pres, 2010-05-27 Another album bought in the early 70`s in vinyl and again as a CD. I can`t tell the difference in terms of sound quality. Of all music bought since nearly 40 years ago this one album is my most played. You just put it on fairly loud and listen to a few blokes play in such a relaxed yet swingin fashion. Lester just weaves lovely webs of music only to be replaced by Teddy Wilson getting a timbre from the piano I have never heard anyone else achieve. Quite fitting because Lester Young made the tenor sound something unlike any other. I wonder if these guys would have had any inkling of how much their sounds would be revered so many years later? This another "jazz" album that is, for me, constrained by that name. This is universal music. Oh that more people coouldn`t hear it.
Wonderful, 2002-01-11 Some years ago I bought the LP. It is getting a bit worn so I was delighted to find the CD on Amazon. Lester is my (and countless others) favourite tenor player. You could name many others but no one else quite has that tone. If you wanted to select the best piano player for Pres then what better than Teddy Wilson: his playing on this cd is pure magic. Gene Ramey and Jo Jones also play wonderfully. Most of the tracks are standards and the whole group plays with with empathy and with a lovely relaxed style. The last track, Pres Returns, is an upbeat blues : listen to the exchanges between Pres and Joe Jones in the closing bars. This is my all time favourite Jazz record and belongs in everyones' collection.
