This is raw music, and was widely derided for it at the time. Nothing could have been further from the rich arrangements of Sgt Pepper, which was quite deliberate. After all, the album's lasgt song ends with Lennon singing "I don't believe in Beatles." Lots of it is very self indulgent, as Lennon smothers the listener in his personal problems. But despite that there is also a lot of very powerful music. Lennon has returned to his roots as a rock 'n roller, and reminds us that he was one of the best. He also shows how as the Beatles were breaking up he developed the ability to make a song work out of very little. Though not a record many people would want to play often, it should appeal to more than Beatle nuts.

Ok Imagine is a great album - but this is certainly up there, and much more approachable than Sometime in New York or Walls and Bridges (which is also another must). Love the song Isolation, plus the wonderful Working Class Hero!

Self-indulgence taken to an extreme.He wanted to no longer be a Beatle but at the same time expected the fame,the fortune and the influence he gained from being a Beatle to continue.

I am going to make this short and sweet, this is without question ONE of the greatest albums ever conceived. Heartfelt and extraordinary, EVERYONE should own this album,it is ONE of THE most important albums of the 20th century, it is that simple.

One of the first LP's I ever owned. It's this album, Marvin Gaye's - What's Going On and Bob Dylan's - Shot Of Love that fight for 'just take one' in my personal Desert Island Albums.
This is John's masterpiece; George had 'All Things Must Pass'; Paul 'Band On The Run' and Ritchie has 'Ringo' - he does hold his own with that album.
Plastic Ono Band is a really sparse sounding album (Lennon successfully stopped Spector from over producing it), true it is self-indulgent but the lyrics are brutally honest - Lennon is confessing. If you're looking for something along the lines of Sgt Pepper, With The Beatles, or Imagine even - then be warned, this probably isn't it.
This is Lennon sharing his therapy - and when all said and done it shows him to be the most artistic of all rock stars to date - most likely ever.
An Album for grown-ups....., only spoilt by the 'extra tracks' added after 'My Mummy's Dead'...., don't they realise that this is a piece of Art?
